    Favorite Horror Films

I need some ideas for good horror films. I love when a film scares me, but it doesn't happen often. When I watch a movie I am always obsessing over how it was made, from the acting, to directing, editing, script, cinematography, everything. I love it when a director and set of actors and editors and camera people can make me feel scared. Go ahead with a top 3, or top 5, or discussion on any horror film that you like. I'll start.

    1. The Shining. An absolute masterpiece from Kubrick.
    2. The Exorcist. Linda Blair is the best child actor ever. The sound editing in particular is unbelievable. Great film, and truly scary.
    3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Very little blood is spilled, yet it is horrifying. Favorite scene, the hitchhiker. And the one where the dude sees Leatherface drag the girl into the kitchen then slam the door. And the end when she escapes and he runs after her with the chainsaw. Least favorite scene, the grandpa.

Honorable mention to a Japanese film called Audition. That's probably the scariest Japan horror film I've seen. Any suggestions?

I don't watch many movies, and I don't scare easily. I recently saw The Ring, and the Japanese original Ringu. More creepy than scary, but both were enjoyable. I think they were equally good, but the American version gets a bit of a lead due to a creepier video.

The ring was pretty scary to me as well. I was visiting my brother and no one was at the house when i arrived. So I picked up the movie and put it in and watched in the dark. Unfamiliar house- alone- and creepy movie was enough for me.... I don't usually scare easy but the original paranormal activity got me going. prolly cuz I didn't really expect it to. There was another movie with mila javovovich that was pretty good the fourth kind.. A lot of John carpenter films are creepy/scary with enough dread mixed in that I really enjoy them like The Fog and The Thing....... "When a Stranger Calls" has bedeviled me since my youth. "The Mothman prophecies" had me going for a bit. "Pet Sematary" freaked me out as a youngan think it was fred gwyn's character that did it oh and the now alive but dead little girl. "salems Lot" is scary as well. Also Cujo freaked me out. Oh and of course the first Nightmare and the firs friday and actually I found Alien to be scary as shit............. Also watch the Evil Dead which is campy but a classic....

Have you seen Dark Water (The Japanese one)? That scared me more than Audition and Ringu put together. Possibly because I saw it in a very old rickety cinema that felt a bit haunted to begin with.

Modern horror films are toss, in my opinion. Any horror film that isn't an 18 certificate isn't worth bothering with (Not sure what the US ratings equivalent is, R?)

I'd stick with the classics like The Amityville Horror, The Omen, Poltergeist - saw all those when I was way too young (thanks to the old video rental shops who didn't care about enforcing ratings laws), and they still stick with me to this day.

Thumbs up for the Fly remake. I definetly recommend to watch other Cronenberg's horror movies like The Brood and Videodrome. But still this is a hard question. There's so many good films.

And i'm with Muddyfunkstar that almost all new horror flicks are sh*t. Still french movie Martyrs was pretty disturbing.

                Hammer horror films ftw!

Watched a movie on Netflix streaming called Grave Encounters. It was pretty creepy, a few jumpy moments.

Two films by James Wan come to mind. Insidious and Dead Silence. The latter needs to be the original though before they added all the goofy cgi.

My vote goes for ROO'S number 2 the Exorcist
because having your mind/soul messed with seems to be the scariest thing I could ever imagine.

THe first movie that came to mind though was Jacobs Ladder.

my short list of scary movies in no paticular order
The Exorcist III (The first has already been mentioned. i found this one scarier.)
Martyrs (this has got everything. torture, mutilation, monsters, ghosts, crazy. be prepared for new levels of depravity)
                            Event Horizon
The Eye (Jessica Alba. havent seen any of the others but i really liked her performance in this one)
Forest of Death (rather different setting. no gore at all. I swear this movie could be rated PG13 but it's one of my favorite horror movies.)
Eden Log (more scifi than horror but very creepy. I love the opening sequence)
Repo! The Genetic Opera (Ok this one might not be all that scary but I love the entire thing. Get it on bluray for the freakin awesome DTS Master audio)

I've seen Audition and one or two others that guy has made. Don't really care for that style of extreme gore and torture.

Exorcist III was the shit. Yeah I don't know about that Audition movie, I saw it like 10 years ago and the scene with that dude in the sack really stuck with me. Old Boy was a trip, a Korean film. Not horror, but crazy nonetheless. Someone else told me to watch the Fourth Kind as a decent new one, I may have to check it out.
