NRA calls for armed police officers in every school

Guns and police officers in all American schools are what's needed to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings," the National Rifle Association declared Friday, taking a no-retreat stance in the face of growing calls for gun control after the Connecticut shootings that claimed the lives of 26 children and school staff.

    WASHINGTON —

Guns and police officers in all American schools are what's needed to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings," the National Rifle Association declared Friday, taking a no-retreat stance in the face of growing calls for gun control after the Connecticut shootings that claimed the lives of 26 children and school staff.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre, the group's chief executive officer.

Some members of Congress who had long scoffed at gun-control proposals have begun to suggest some concessions could be made, and a fierce debate over legislation seems likely next month. President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now."

The nation's largest gun-rights lobby broke its weeklong silence on the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School with a defiant presentation. The event was billed as a news conference, but NRA leaders took no questions. Twice, they were interrupted by banner-waving protesters, who were removed by security.

Some had predicted that after the slaughter of a score of elementary-school children by a man using a semi-automatic rifle, the group might soften its stance, at least slightly. Instead, LaPierre delivered a 25-minute tirade against the notion that another gun law would stop killings in a culture where children are exposed daily to violence in video games, movies and music videos. He argued that guns are the solution, not the problem.

"Before Congress reconvenes, before we engage in any lengthy debate over legislation, regulation or anything else; as soon as our kids return to school after the holiday break, we need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protection program proven to work," LaPierre said. "And by that I mean armed security."

He said Congress should immediately appropriate funds to post an armed police officer in every school. Meanwhile, he said the NRA would develop a school emergency response program that would include volunteers from the group's 4.3 million members to help guard children.

No. There is no "future catastrophe". Everybody's tripping over themselves trying to look like they're doing something, and what'll happen is everybody's rights will be reduced yet again, and the original "problem" will remain. I say "problem" because this crap never happens. It just gets reported on the news so much, and for so long it seems like it does. Three times as many people died on our highways on Dec 15 than they did in that school. What are we gonna do about that?

The schools here cant even afford music or PE teachers. How are they going to pay for armed guards? Also, I have known security guards that are triggy happy mental cases. I wouldn't want them anywhere near my kids school with a gun. I am not anti gun but I am for an all out ban on semi automatic weapons. You can still kill someone with a bolt action rifle or a revolver. A ban would make it more difficult and time consuming to kill large amounts of people.

Train and arm the administrators. I taught in K12 for the last 16 years of my life. Some of these schools are real hell holes.

Yes, that's a great idea. I cant read the news for one day without seeing an article about a teacher molesting a student or being involved in some kind of scandal. I realize that 99% of the teachers out there are great people but I am concerned about the 1%. Schools should be about using you brains to solve problems. I would switch my kids school in 2 seconds if they started arming teachers or administrators.

I think the Real solution is getting rid of public schools. I get taxed for them along side everything else and I have no kids attending ..Communism anyone ? Have the parents take a better role in the childs edu .. if you #1 cant afford to have them or #2 dont have time to spend with ... DONT HAVE em !

Yes! Another great idea loot. What our country needs are a lot more illiterate people so we can compete with the Chinese for labor.

All im saying is .. It shouldn't be the Govt's responsibility to Educate the masses. Very few want to take responsibility of their own anymore.

Name me one country without a public education system that is doing better than us right now. Here is a partial list for you: http://www.ehow.com/info_7929179_cou...education.html

The world is full of cheap labor. Our only edge in the world economy is education and technology. Sadly, we are now lagging in those areas. I believe what we need is an educational system that teaches kids the basics and prepares them to be successful in todays workforce. The schools are slowly catching on to this and charter schools are popping up everywhere in California.

Now for my 2 cents (or even less than that) on school safety. I would love to see Aikido being taught in public schools. It is a way to defend yourself using your body and your brain. It is also a good form of exercise physically, spiritually and mentally. Any idiot can pull a trigger. People need to learn how to use their minds to solve problems. Aikido wouldn't help a buch of first graders but I am sure it would be great at the jr. high and high school level. Pure speculation but maybe there would have been less damage if the teachers were also skilled in this martial art.

If a teacher feels like they are unsafe at work unless they are packing an Uzi, perhaps it is time for them to find another profession.

Kids need to have their asses beaten. They get away with bullshit because it's allowed, and rewarded. Useless sacks of meat send their idiot offspring to the schools for babysitting, and the teachers aren't allowed to properly babysit. The kids have to be there by law, so everyone has to deal with them, but can't do what it takes to maintain control. Everyone loses.
