Mentats (modafinil, piracetam, and the like)

A friend suggested these to me recently, and I've been doing a little research on the subject of nootropics (aka smart drugs). They sound interesting.

Have any of you tried these before? If so, what was your experience like?

I purchased a KG of Piracetam about two years back, and used them for a month. I wasn't able to get a good opinion on it because I was using prescription amphetamine also. I figured they would work well together, but I swore it made it harder to concentrate. There are forums for smart-drugs, analogous to this snus-forum, centered around them, and the hardcore users made it clear that amphetamine in combination with the -racetams were bad, due to amphetamine opening up one channel in your brain and the -racetams opening up another, the combination of which would degrade something or another in your brain. There were no counter-arguments: the consensus was that amphetamines and -racetams did not go well together, and with my combination of fuzzyness I decided to stop them.

I haven't taken amphetamine for about 5 months now. I in fact forgot that I possessed a kg of piracetam until this post haha. I'll start taking them again and tell you what I think.

Apparently it takes 2 weeks to 3 months to start affecting you. I thought this indicated that it was bullshit, but Wellbutrin and SSRIs work the same way, so maybe.

The studies look semi-promising.. Peer reviewed studies say it works in patients that ALREADY have dementia. There is no consensus on whether it prevents dementia: not enough studies. Theree is no consensus on whether it actually enhances the mind in healthy people: not enough studies. The only study I found in normal people that looked legitimate to me was one in 25 college students which should a statistically significant boost in some vocabulary. Yet another study said no benefits in spatial-shit.

What I know for sure: take them with eggs! 4 eggs actually. I cannot recall the chemical, but there is some chemical you need to take in combination with the -racetams. At the very least they won't work without that chemical, and at worst it is not good to take them without them.

Apparently there are differences within the -racetams other than dosage; some people think they are more effective for certain tasks... No studies to back that up, all anecdotal.

Everything is anecdotal, not enough studies in general for -racetams.

    -------

Modafinil: I am a long time amphetamine user. I did not notice anything while taking modinifil when I took a break from amphetamines for a few months. It is also too expensive. My mother, not a speed user, on the other hand tried an analog of Modafinil (I forget which one) and said that she was talking too much in her social group, and thought she was overstepping social boundaries. She was unsure whether it did anything in regards to concentration or for mental tasks at her desk job, which is why she got it in the first place.

They say that it is used by Air Force pilots who need to be awake for 36 hours. Apparently you can sleep on them easily, unlike amphetamines, but you just don't have the desire to sleep.

    -------

In general I've been interested in nootropics, namely -racetams, for a while, but could never use them since amphetamine is clearly superior for certain tasks and interferes with the -racetams. But the goal of the -racetams is not necessarily to increase concentration or work ethic but to increase intelligence. I'll start using piracetam and repost in a month.

The friend that told me about the 'mentats' is in the Air Force.......... That must be the reason why he's suggesting them to me. It's all making cents now!

Do I come across as one who has used drug in excess !? I've been trying to rid that from my personality; I better try harder.

I have never heard of the term 'mentats', can you ask your friend if that is slang peculiar to the Air Force ? I'm used to "Nootropic" or "Smart-drugs" or even, loosely, "Racetams" in reference to all nootropics, -racetam based or not.

Oh ya: Piracetam is considered the staple; the only one of which there has been serious peer reviewed studies on a large scale for dementia patients, mostly all of which indicate that it improves their dementia/mental breakdown. Piracetam is the easiest to synthesize and thus the cheapest. However it requires the largest dosage: 0.5 to 3g if i recall correctly? Another one, aniracetam I beleive, works in the miligram range, but is much more expensive. You also want to take them several times throughout the day.

I take a number of supplements and have experimented with many in the past. Some are shiet and some are great. I have been looking into smart drugs/nootropics lately and would also be interested in hearing some input from someone who has taken them.

Odd, I've always equated Buffouts to Steroids (...... or maybe 'angel dust' )
