Is Facebook envy making you miserable?

(Reuters) - Witnessing friends' vacations, love lives and work successes on Facebook can cause envy and trigger feelings of misery and loneliness, according to German researchers.
A study conducted jointly by two German universities found rampant envy on Facebook, the world's largest social network that now has over one billion users and has produced an unprecedented platform for social comparison.
The researchers found that one in three people felt worse after visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives, while people who browsed without contributing were affected the most.
"We were surprised by how many people have a negative experience from Facebook with envy leaving them feeling lonely, frustrated or angry," researcher Hanna Krasnova from the Institute of Information Systems at Berlin's Humboldt University told Reuters.
"From our observations some of these people will then leave Facebook or at least reduce their use of the site," said Krasnova, adding to speculation that Facebook could be reaching saturation point in some markets.
Researchers from Humboldt University and from Darmstadt's Technical University found vacation photos were the biggest cause of resentment with more than half of envy incidents triggered by holiday snaps on Facebook.
Social interaction was the second most common cause of envy as users could compare how many birthday greetings they received to those of their Facebook friends and how many "likes" or comments were made on photos and postings.
"Passive following triggers invidious emotions, with users mainly envying happiness of others, the way others spend their vacations and socialize," the researchers said in the report "Envy on Facebook: A Hidden Threat to Users' Life Satisfaction?" released on Tuesday.

I'm not even gonna read this, but I'm sure this is just one of the reasons I hate facebook. I ran a business and blocked this and myspace as soon as I caught the loan processors playing on it. Such a waste of life...My wife is always on it and it drives me fookin crazy! These people are NOT your "friends".

I've never had a Facebook (or a Myspace), and I'm not about to start...

I've got relatives who use it (sister, aunt/uncle, cousins, etc. etc.), and some of them have tried to get me to join... If my own family can't persuade me, then I don't think anything will..................Unless Facebook starts giving out free dope to its subscribers.....

        -------------

... and I'll be honest -- I don't even look at my relatives' Facebooks...

I disabled mine and don't miss it a bit. And I do not have a Twitter account. I could not take the judgemental a-holes on facebook anymore, with their pictures judging how everyone should live, and all of the "instant come to mind so I must say it" idiotic moronic things most people have to say. Combine all that with the recent presedential elections, then the Conn shootings, and I was DONE. What I see on there would make me so mad and when I would reply with some sane logic, I was blasted as an idiot. So screw that. I disabled my acct, and I am so much happier for it.

I don't have a facebook, and I never will. Facebook is a blight on society, and the sooner it goes tits up, the better, and it will go tits up.

I am in the same boat with the wife. It has become the pseudo way of communicating to all family with,

Did you not see my facebook?

Have to be on it for work related ad's but I never post and have unfriended all the people who overpost dribble or politcal views.

The only good thing is seeing how ugly some old girlfriends have become or women who would not give you the time of day. That actually should make you feel less miserable.

I totally agree. It has taken the mostly moronic people in our society and turned them into complete morons, morons who now think they come from a place of superiority. lol

While Facebook has its good sides....

90% of it is pure junk, a total waste of time and bad impact on every society.

Still people like it though... I don't

I had a facebook for maybe 2-3 months a few years ago. I deleted every bit of personal info from the page, and removed all the "friends", and disabled the account. I want nothing to do with facebook/myspace/twitter/etc, and I don't miss not having a facebook one bit.

I'm in my 20's, and I still get looked at like I'm some sort of freak of nature for not having one though.

facebook just like myspace is just a "idiotic" trend...

as a marketer I can say that, people will shortly get bored of it and something new will hit the market

I like Facebook. It's not for the sensitive type though.

I've closed down Facebook twice because people just do my head in......I'm not a people person, in fact people just piss me off. I recently opened it again simply as an easy way to share photographs and videos of her grandchildren with my mother as I'm in England and she's in France/Ireland.
Nobody else is allowed on this time - I don't use my real name and I don't use a profile picture that anybody can recognise. My security is all tightened up so that only my mother can have access.

Yeah Similar to Frosted i closed an account then opened a new anonymous one to chat to people who listen to the same radio station. You know, the groups they have on there.

Never had it, never will...I really value my privacy and think it is crazy all the information freely given to facebook/myspace ..If used for a business or advertising tool I can see the benefits...Hell, I do not tell my co-workers anything about my personal life and end any inquiries in a kind, but quick way.

People tell me I am too secretive, or paranoid, but I believe that all this personal information freely handed up for the world could turn ugly fast. I also do not trust a corporate entity like "facebook" one bit and want them to know f#%k all about me.

I am a loner and do not like most people, I cannot stand half the people I encounter in my daily life, so F$&k FB
