Is Detroit Going To Hell in a Handbasket?

Detroiters pledge uprising during state takeover: ‘Make sure you are prepared and you will survive’
    Motor City Muckrake ^

Councilman Kwame Kenyatta and a packed room of Detroiters warned today of an impending revolt against state intervention, urging residents to stock up on canned food and supplies.
“Even the Bloods in the hood fight for their territory,” Kenyatta said during a 20-minute monologue on the civil rights struggle at today’s city council meeting. “You are going to have to drag me out of here for me to leave.”
Kenyatta cited Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became an intellectual and civil rights icon, because of his position that black people must sacrifice their lives, if necessary, to win freedom and the right to vote. Many in the audience stood up and applauded.
One by one, Detroiters pledged to take to the streets once Gov. Rick Snyder appoints an emergency manager, which is expected Thursday or Friday. Others threatened to block the entrance of city hall.
“Save up and purchase food, canned goods and water because you are going to see a new civil rights movement,” pledged Marie Thornton, a former Detroit Public Schools Board member. “I won’t give up my right to vote. We are going to shut down freeways and we are going to disrupt the economic system.”
Added Valerie Glenn, a community activist: “Make sure you are prepared and you will survive.”
Protests so far have been nonviolent. Demonstrators slowed traffic to a few miles per hour on I-75 and I-94 in the past week. But that’s mild for what’s to come, some warned.
What about black Detroiters who aren’t prepared to fight?
“We have fought for everything we have; how do you sit on the sidelines?” Kenyatta asked.

Detroit was already hell. Only place I ever went to pick up at Domino's and got my pizza thru a slot like the being at the bank.

Racine, Wisconsin and Gary, Indiana are number 2 and 3 one my list.

I would rather be in Oakland or Birmigham than those places.

Well, glad to read that people are getting prepared for the worst over there. Best of luck to them.

Detroit is just down the road from me. I get the local news and it's all very depressing. The guy they appointed is some sort of bankruptcy specialist, I'm sure the city will be filing for bankruptcy soon.

Crullers, you like on the other side of the line or you in USSA also?

Detroit is just foreshadowing whats to come for North American locations who cant limit municipal debt.

Anyone here about that guy who takes tourists on these dangerous ghetto "safaris" to look at fantastic architecture and stuff around Detroit?

I'm on the Canadian side, I can be in downtown Detroit in about an hour. I've been there many times for concerts and ball games regrettably I haven't caught a hockey game there yet. I don't think I'll bother because now I need a passport and I can't be arsed to get one right now. It's too bad because once upon a time it would be no problem heading to the states and it used to be fun. Too much of a hassle now. I get the local news over the air from Detroit and Cleveland, neither place seems to be doing well. The corruption that has been going on in Detroit for some time just blows my mind.

How stupid are these people? Leave Detroit like everyone else, the situation is beyond rescue.

Ya, like everybody can just pick up and leave whenever they want. Don't be an ass.

Canada did a much better job of seeing the writing on the wall. You closer to Thunder Bay or Windsor?

Except for my time in White Horse (yuk) and that one little time Canadian immigration locked me up (hehe), I really liked Canada.

I'm close to Windsor. Never been to your neck of the woods but I've got Alaska on my bucket list.

You gotta do the drive up the Alcan from Dawson City! Hit Tok, AK head to Fairbanks. Drive thru Denali and then to south central for a glacier cruise!

When I was in Dawson City, i got my tools out of the truck and bought some cases of oil. Made a little cardboard sign. Did $50 oil changes right on the side of the road for the tourists.

I have a brother in Yellowknife so something like that will be in my hopefully not too distant future. Will be a hell of a road trip!

I can go from Regina to the border of Alaska in about 5 days on at slavedrive speed but I rather take 10 and hit the greyling and all the sites.

No point in rushing if you don't have to. Lots of great stuff to take in if you want to.
