@Whalen: What is the story for the offensive use of V sign then? We learned at school exactly what you described for the finger, but the professor´s version talked about "V"

Yes I remember it being the V sign, a common sign here for saying "up yours".

        May I answer?

In times of frequent wars between England and France the english longbowmen were famous for their skill. If captured by the french - the english longbowmen would have the index and middle finger cut off to make sure they could never fire another arrow at the french.

So the V sign - showing your index and middle finger was a show of defiance by the english towards the french to say - I still have these two fingers. And also as a veiled threat meaning "I will kill you"

        Cheers

Your savvy of cult medieval history is only paralleled by your enthusiastic experiments with smokeless tobacco. You are a thoroughly inspiring character. :-)
