    IRS tracks your digital footprint

The Internal Revenue Service is collecting a lot more than taxes this year -- it's also acquiring a huge volume of personal information on taxpayers' digital activities, from eBay auctions to Facebook posts and, for the first time ever, credit card and e-payment transaction records, as it expands its search for tax cheats to places it's never gone before.

The implications should be obvious here...

They absolutely do. In fact, it's a trivial task. It's not like they have goo... erm... agents looking at individual people and putting their data into a spreadsheet they coded themselves. The data is already collected, and computers scan it for relevant information. It's trivial today, and it's only going to get easier and finer grained going into the future.

Lxskllr, you seem to know a bit about the government's data collection processes. Could you elaborate on the type of server's they use to collect this data? They must be extra special.

              Mainframe? Solaris? SAP? Windows?

I don't know what kind servers they use, but they have at least two datacenters on the east coast, and a new huge one in Idaho, but that one hasn't been finished yet AFAIK.

Also how would there database's import this data?

This special computer system must run insane petaFLOPS and be linked with every IP in the country.

                  I'am wrong to assume this?

No you're not. The one in Idaho is meant to collect and STORE every piece of information that flows across the web. The ones on the east coast aren't as sophisticated AFAIK, but less has been written about those.

Echelon been around for relatively ever. And Like LX said it has and will just get better. Imagine your PC circa 2000 when you could barely navigate the web and what it is now. Remember upgrading every year than every other. Now your average home computer will last 5 yrs plus with no hardware upgrades for the average user and still be 100 time faster than it was in 2000.

I'm sure everyone here does. I've heard reports of cigarette buyers getting popped for large tax bills buying online.

Lest we forget About DARPA or ARPA They were the true source of the internets.. If you think for one minute the Government can't figure out what your saying or doing you are sadly mistaken. I suppose you haven't noticed that when you innocently look up a product on the web that magically the next day every banner on evrysite you visit is an ad for said product. Do you not think that's a computer doing that? We are being watched from all angles at this point. And yes they may prioritize, But I guaranty they are prioritizing their income first and foremost and fake terrorists like al CIAda and American veterans.

i was thinking more like crap you buy off amazon and such. you're expected to pay the sales tax on it when you file taxes.
