      Cold capitals

I'm surprised that Ottawa is less cold than some of the apparently coldest capitals in the world. For example, Helsinki. The wikipedia says the following about Helsinki:

"The city's climate is humid continental (dfb), meaning the average of the coldest month is no more than −3 °C. Summers are usually pleasantly warm, daily maximum temperatures during the summer-months are usually around 18-26 °C, temperatures above 30 °C are very uncommon. Helsinki is situated on approximately the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska, making it the second northernmost capital in the world after Reykjavík, Iceland, hence the very short days in winter. However, Helsinki's average temperatures are clearly higher than those of Anchorage due to favorable sea-currents"

In Ottawa if we had a winter that was never colder than -3 degrees celcius, we would be alarmed and call it global warming In fact -3 is considered a fairly balmy day here in the winter.

I'll check out the other capitals. We don't want to lose our place!

        Cold capitals continued

Me again. Seems that even Moscow is warmer in the winter than it is here in Ottawa. Again I turn to the Wiki:

"Moscow is exposed to cold winters, warm and mild summers, and very brief spring and autumn seasons. Typical high temperatures in the warm months of July and August are around 22°C (72°F); in the winter, temperatures normally drop to approximately -12°C (10°F) highest temperature ever recorded was +36.7 °C (98.1 °F).[9] and lowest ever recorded -42.2C in January 1940. Monthly rainfall totals vary minimally throughout the year, although the precipitation levels tend to be higher during the summer than during the winter. Due to the significant variation in temperature between the winter and summer months as well as the limited fluctuation in precipitation levels during the summer, Moscow is considered to be within a continental climate zone."

I just looked up Ottawa, and it says that Ottawa is the 7th coldest capital. Apparently this is based on the *average* temperature for the year. Well, now that makes sense. But I still maintain that *winters* in Ottawa are colder than virtually any other capital in the world.

          ^ read a bit further :

"Ottawa is only the seventh coldest capital in the world[8] by annual average temperature, however by mean January temperature, Ottawa ranks third behind Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Astana, Kazakhstan"

Thanks, Zero, for clearing that up!

Of course, if the USSR had not cracked up, we'd still be #2. So much for all those 'stans around

                TEXAS by God!
New Camel & Marlboro snus is really selling well here in central Texas. Probably due to the fact that a lot of us are used to chew or dip.
I have tried the Marlboro - Camel is totally sold out everywhere.
I have an order each from buysnus and northerner on the way. I can't wait to try 16 different brands. Also, in 1 week I've cut my cigarette intake in half.
                I love snus already!!

I live in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, the home of BBQ and Jazz. I've lived in Texas and Michigan, too, but keep ending up here for some reason. Probably the BBQ.

                      Me too - GO WINGS!!!!

The recently-convinced in Dallas the year the Stars won the Stanley Cup were pretty interesting. I had definite mixed emotions that year!

Portland, Oregon. The land of many trees and many, many rainclouds. Wonderful place to live though.
