Cold capitals

I'm surprised that Ottawa is less cold than some of the apparently coldest capitals in the world. For example, Helsinki. The wikipedia says the following about Helsinki:

"The city's climate is humid continental (dfb), meaning the average of the coldest month is no more than −3 °C. Summers are usually pleasantly warm, daily maximum temperatures during the summer-months are usually around 18-26 °C, temperatures above 30 °C are very uncommon. Helsinki is situated on approximately the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska, making it the second northernmost capital in the world after Reykjavík, Iceland, hence the very short days in winter. However, Helsinki's average temperatures are clearly higher than those of Anchorage due to favorable sea-currents"

In Ottawa if we had a winter that was never colder than -3 degrees celcius, we would be alarmed and call it global warming In fact -3 is considered a fairly balmy day here in the winter.

I'll check out the other capitals. We don't want to lose our place!

Me again. Seems that even Moscow is warmer in the winter than it is here in Ottawa. Again I turn to the Wiki:

"Moscow is exposed to cold winters, warm and mild summers, and very brief spring and autumn seasons. I just looked up Ottawa, and it says that Ottawa is the 7th coldest capital. Apparently this is based on the *average* temperature for the year. Well, now that makes sense. But I still maintain that *winters* in Ottawa are colder than virtually any other capital in the world. :wink:

New Camel & Marlboro snus is really selling well here in central Texas. Probably due to the fact that a lot of us are used to chew or dip.
