Its raining like crazy here in Illinois

I woke up to a bad float switch to a sump pump in my basement. Only got 2 or 3 inches in an unfinished basement. Well pretty much unfinished. I made it so it can flood a bit without wrecking anything. Heres the deal.....I get tons of water here when we get a bad rain but I'm prepared.....

I have three 1/2 hp 2" effluent/water pumps in my pit. At the worst of any rainy weather one pump stays on and the second pump will kick on and off every few minutes to keep the water at a safe level. The third pump is there in case one of the others breaks. I have everything going now just fine. WTF....I'll be glad to have a house on a slab when I move.

gotta go monitor the pumps. bbl

I haven't been out yet today but the news stations are reporting quite a few roads that are flooded/closed. I think this is one of the worst water problems that we have had in years.

I bet home depot is already sold out of pumps.

I have to hang around to monitor things just in case a circuit breaker pops, an outlet fries, or a pump malfunctions. After being here for 35 years and not ever wanting my basement to flood......... I'm set up pretty good with commercial hardware. Even tho each of the 3 pumps has its own breaker and outlet anything can fail.

When I moved here there was one little pump in the pit. I soon learned that the previous owner just let the basement flood because there was no way a 1/4 hp pump could do the job. So I tossed in a 2" 1/2hp effluent pump and it worked great......99% of the time. But it just couldn't eject all the water during the heaviest downpours. So I added another one to make sure it would stay dry. But thats only good if nothing breaks. So I put in a third pump. That doesn't mean that 2 pumps won't break tho.

I have a big generator that can handle the entire house if we lose power. Thats really a life saver.

I'm so tired of this big old place. I'm so ready to buy a nice new little house in Ga. I've recently decided to just go buy that new house and start moving...at my pace. I can handle the taxes and insurance on the house in Ga without a problem, even if it take another year to sell this place. But once I've got most everything moved I'll drop the price on this house and sell it. Hell every year I stay here it costs me about 10k for just the taxes and insurance.......and that cheap for my neighborhood. There is no way I can stay here. Next year it will be about 11k....and so on.

          sucks

Twin independent pumps and switches with one on battery backup is my approach.

sadly, that wouldn't even come close to handeling all the water I have to deal with.

Apparently, as I've been told years ago by the building commissioner, there is an underground spring coming from a nearby lake that flows to a creek I live near. When I first moved here I used to get 2 to 4 inch fish in my sump pit when we had the worst downpours. Hence the reason I use effluent/water pumps. So they never get jammed. I think they are perch.

the rain has pretty much stopped. but that doesn't matter because just off the edge of my property there is an area on the church property that is dug out to hold excess water during these downpours. When that surface water receeds my pumps will go back to sleep. That will take a few days to. By tonight only one pump will be needed so its all cool here now. I suppose I don't really have to babysit them now but today I have plenty of time to hang around the house.......waiting for my UPS man to bring another order

The inward flow has already started to slow down.

Between the old lake at the country club accross the road and the new lake that formed on the church property last night and the creek on the other side of my property the ducks are having a blast.

                      Froggy would love it here.

oh, all my snus is in a huge freezer out in the garage....and its high and dry.
