    Do you speak Cascadian?

I should post this in the Cascadian Snussers group, but I am curious to see the results from those outside of Cascadia --

    Take the test:

"Say 'caught' and 'cot' out loud. If you're a true Northwest speaker, the words will sound identical."

Do you say "pail" or "bucket"? If you're a true Northwest speaker, you say "bucket."

Is your voice "creaky" or "breathy"? Northwesterners sound creaky (whatever that means).

That's all according to a University of Washington linguist, who goes on to say, "Everyone thinks the Pacific Northwest is too young a region to have our own dialect. It's discrimination."

    ------------

Here's a bonus for you... Can you pronounce these words??

    Willamette
    Puyallup
    Sequim
    Molalla
    Nanaimo
    Palouse

............. and can you tell me what these words mean?

    Geoduck
    Skookum
    Tillicum
    Green Chain
    Skid Road
    Pulaski
    Kokanee
    Coho
    Dungeness
    Chihuly
    Frangos
    Bumpershoot

    ----------

    Miscellaneous data:

The linguistic traits that flourish throughout the Pacific Northwest attest to a culture that transcends national boundaries in the region. Historically, this hearkens back to the early years of colonial expansion by the British and Americans, when the entire region was considered to be a single, unified area. Until the Oregon Treaty of 1846, it was identified as being either Oregon Country (by the Americans) or Columbia (by the British).
Although residents of the Pacific Northwest shared many cultural traditions and norms, it was not until the latter 20th century that their dialect became recognized officially as distinct.

I say bucket rather than pail ... so I must be from the north west USA / BC ... which from my experience in BC a few years back would be my best ever experience of the North American continent ... your sweetcorn, wine, blueberries, salmon and free love is something I would like to recreate in more of my life!

        What? No Bosco?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I'll give the definitions a bash ... tell me how accurate I am!

Geoduck = a fossilized aquatic bird?

Skookum = Good, strong of character, brave?

Tillicum = A specific piece of agricultural equipment that breaks up the soil and stimulates the farmer to orgasm at the same time?

Green Chain = It's like a daisy chain but is a token that kids of stoners give to eachother made from linking buds of MJ together in to a necklace?

Skid Road = a road with many surprisingly tight corners that end up requiring "above average" levels of underwear laundering?

Pulaski = a cable car that takes skiiers back up to the top of the mountain?

Kokanee = a specific sexual perversion where very short men engage in frottage with full sized women?

Coho = living in the same house as a prostitute?

Dungeness = umm - a small region of Kent (England) that the army occupy?

Chihuly = a very small dog trained to jump through hoops?

Frangos = a French fast food outlet?

Bumpershoot = A farmer's legendary orgasm that only occurs when the crop has been unusually large ... (see Tillicum)?

          Do I win?

Geoduck- pronunced "gooey duck", a clam born with its own fleshlight.

Skookum- better than best, its "skookum". Sometimes used for something which worn apperance belies it's reliability.

Skid Road- as in log skidder.

Pulaski- an axe mated to a grub hoe. Useful for digging firebreaks.

            Kokanee-cheap beer!

            Coho- silver salmon

Dungeness- crab, the inferior to King crab but fine for less favorite in-laws. They wont know the damn difference anyway!

The Palouse- best damn most enviable top soil region in the US. One of the best cattle areas of the US.

I'm glad you had a great time in BC... But you've only experienced a third of Cascadia!

Next time you're here, check out Washington and Oregon. We're just a train ride away (on the Amtrak Cascades)

Wow, the taxpayers bought a really lovely train! Alaskan taxpayers only could afford a dirty old train.

Teehee. Sorry, Crow! Any mention of Amtrack brings it out!

                  Ok back on track(oops):
Naturally, Alaska is home to many Cascadians who have contributed to the rich vocabulary here, but Im mixed up sometimes about which terms they brought:

Do Cascadians say pop, soda, coke, or soda-pop?

Do Cascadians say "lunch box", "lunch pail", or "lunch box"?

The third one should have said "lunch bucket".

So does "get 'er done" come from the NW? Or is my little town redneck ville

I cheated and Googled them up. Interesting.

No, "get 'er done" is from Larry the Cable Guy, he's from Nebraska.
