AU: Raise The Tobacco Tax Four Times Over The Next Four Years

"Last week Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced it would raise the tobacco tax four times over the next four years to raise $1.3 billion.

This will add over $5 to the price of a pack of cigarettes by 2016 bringing the price of each cigarette to almost $1 a stick."

Will this also affect snus users as well?

I think they should require a licence for dumb ass.........what we have here is a four year plan to establish a thriving black market
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

I sure do wish the black market suppliers would sell stock. I could likely collect a nice retirement fund if I invested in that one.

Yes and with the way the government is out to collect taxes, it would be a safe investment.

I am constantly amazed at how high the tobacco taxes are in some countries and in some states in the US.

I am just wondering what they will go after when the tobacco kitty runs dry.

Our government suck - smokes are already so expensive - a pack of 25 is $18 to $21 already, depending on where you buy them.

IMHO the real people who will suffer will be the kids of single families or low income families or pensioners who smoke. The only alternative available to the common person is NRT which cost a fortune. The new nicorette spray for quitting is up to $70 for a twin pack.

We are not allowed to grow tobacco - no snus - no nicotine for ecig - i am sure we are the testing ground for the rest of the world.

So if mum and dad both smoke a pack of 25 a day - and they cost $25 - thats $350 a week (my maths likely sucks). Regardless of any stats the aussie government puts out - the average person here likely takes home $600 a week. The cost of living is astronomical here.

Government sucks because they do all this without allowing any other means of getting nicotine.

                  Actually lol government just suck

NYC Council Votes To Make Tobacco-Buying Age 21

"City lawmakers approved the bill — which raises from 18 to 21 the purchasing age for cigarettes, certain tobacco products and even electronic-vapor smokes — and another that sets minimum prices for tobacco cigarettes and steps up law enforcement on illegal tobacco sales." http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2013/oc...buying-age-21/

Check out the cigarette prices in the photo. Are they that high where you live?

In Australia you can add at least $5 to those prices and they come in an olive drab packet covered in pictures of diseased lungs, dead babies, mouth tumors etc.
The cigarette choice has become very limited and the stick size has shrunk.
A friend of mine gets his cigs on the black market from the U.S. and they are a third bigger than the local ones. The tobacco quality has deteriorated markedly over the last ten years also. That's why I'm so thankful that I discovered Snus.
