    Opinions please...

I posted awhile ago about my job being cut to part time, well I'm still part time looking for full time work. I absolutely hate working here now. I feel betrayed and just pissed off in general.

Here's my dilemma: I'm the IT/AV guy and there's a huge conference here this Thursday and Friday live via satellite. They want me to work it but its not my normal hours. So I wouldn't get overtime, just time off next week. Not the first time its happened since I went part time. I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. If you needed someone to do all this shit, then why make your tech guy part time!? Dumb asses...

The only thing that is swaying me towards doing it is my co-worker, who's a friend got this all dumped in his lap. He needs my help. The upper management just expect that I'll do it...

Of course I don't want to burn my bridges but they need to know I'm not on call now that I'm part time...Thoughts opinions?

Man if you had asked me on Friday I would recommend pitching in and doing the best you can. But now that it is Monday, I think ripping the bosses arm off and trying to kill as many as you can with it may be an option, but I do have these mood swings sometimes.

Hard to say. The right thing to do is give you more money for exceptional circumstances.

How bad do you need the job? If you don't absolutely need it, tell them the terms are unacceptable, and they'll have to give you more money to work. If they balk, walk. Sucks about your friend, but you're being the company's bitch now, and it'll happen again.

If you need the job, I guess you're stuck. Helping your friend will make the shit sandwich taste better, but you need to find different employment.

I would advise you to help your friend. I can definitely understand your frustration, but it might not be wise to raise a stink in the middle of a job search.
Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear....

Unfortunately this is the new ethics in business brought about by the Gov's new regulation re: benefits and etc. To stay afloat companies are having to resort to more part time employees......this in turn means finagling schedules to keep cost down for extra work.

As long as you are part time this will be the reality you face........ regardless of where you work.

The point is that you are not really being screwed (I mean you are being screwed....... but it is the current scenario that defines the greater market place and not the particular company in this case that is doing the screwing)

I'd do it and then use the time next week to look for something full time.

If you blow out of there over this in a huff.......you next employer (who is also working under the same confines of the same market place and finagling his schedules in the same way) will not look favorably on your reasoning.

The situation sucks.........but might I add that.........many of your coworkers (and maybe even you yourself) voted for it........voted for this very economic policy and ideology........... Here then is a good lesson.....nothing is free.....not healthcare, wage increases, nor mandated benefits...........and in the end.......the bill gets passed down to the workers..........which is why you are part time and have no overtime....you are paying for all the free stuff you are not getting.

Go to work.......go understanding that they are not screwing you in this case........in November vote well.......and in the meantime.....look for something full time

          Just my 2 cents
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

Unfortunately I need the job while I'm searching for full time. If I didn't have a family, and wasn't worried about burning bridges I woulda told them to shove it up their ass a long time ago.

So as much as I hate this place, and all the people...I think I'm gonna work the conference.
I just let my friend/co-worker run the live test. He almost cried he's so stressed cause he has no idea how I set all this up...

            Thanks for your input guays!

I'm in somewhat similar circumstances. Because management at my company couldn't run a lemonade stand and put the business in dire straits we've had to take a 20% pay cut which we are taking in the form of one extra day off per week. We have a project deadline looming and the reduced manpower means the deadline will not be met. Will I put in any extra time for this company for free? Hell no. I suggest you listen to your conscience but if it were me I'd tell them to go f*ck themselves, especially if they are not going to pay you for it. Unless of course this means they'll let you go from your part-time position. If your friend is a true friend he would understand your position. Business has gotten away with far too much crap like this for far too long. Unfortunately the only thing you can do about it is as Snusdog says - vote well.

The answer is plainly stated on page three of the Husqvarna manual.... refer to the part where it says "Never"...

Or the post office manual where it says "Under no circumstances"...
Just give them the "look" I just gave mr. Below me here where I work. Then spit.

I found the answer in a prayer. You can too.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

May as well give them your best and make them regret cutting your hours down. Maybe you were making more money than some and it was simply financial in their part. Jobs are hard to find worth having these days and it could be awhile. Tink of the time off....not the time on? Personal projects that make you feel good. Most my jobs only made me feel good only periodically. Like when I got my paycheck
