Syria hails 'historic American retreat' as Obama hesitates

Syria hailed an "historic American retreat" on Sunday, mockingly accusing President Barack Obama of hesitation and confusion after he delayed a military strike to consult Congress.
"Obama announced yesterday, directly or through implication, the beginning of the historic American retreat," Syria's official al-Thawra newspaper said in a front-page editorial.
Syria's deputy foreign minister Faisal Mekdad accused Obama of indecision. "It is clear there was a sense of hesitation and disappointment in what was said by President Barack Obama yesterday. And it is also clear there was a sense of confusion as well," he told reporters in Damascus.

We need to stay away from Syria and worry more about the impoverished people in our own country. If we strike Syria, we could be opening up Pandora's box.

Nobody is really mentioning it, but the elephant in the room in this whole debacle in Syria is Russia.

It is ironic is it not, that we went to war with Iraq because they 'had' weapons of mass destruction yet here we have Syria using them with impunity. The Iraq 'cock up' is still haunting the west. It is due to this that it is difficult to act.
Then, if you do act, just what is it that you are going to achieve? Absoloutely nothing. You would just add to the misery. It is painful, the images were intensely disturbing and an affront to humanity, but the dust must settle before outside Armies force the disposal of these weapons.

There is simply no saving the insane witches' brew that is the Syrian Civil War. Once Assad is rousted out the real fratricide will begin with every whackjob Islamist in the Middle East flocking to what is beginning to look like a major Sunni vs. Shia extravaganza of death and destruction. Next year the region will pine for the days when only a mere 100,000 people had died in the conflicts. There aren't enough cruise missles on the planet to make any real difference in such a toxic stew. They can only make the rubble bounce.

Neither will there be Western boots on the ground. No leader in the west is crazy enough to insert troops into such a nightmare and the only leader in the region liable to conduct any cross-border ops is Turkey's Erdogan who is trying very hard to don the mantle of Islamist W.J. He might just do it as part of his longing to reify the Ottoman Empire. Careful what you wish for Recep old man.

The USA has no business in Syria. The same way we had no business being in Iraq.

We need to mind our own business. It was not our job to remove Saddam from power, and this isn't our business either.

Reuters Exclusive: USS Nimitz Carrier Group Rerouted for Possible Help With Syria

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and other ships in its strike group are heading west toward the Red Sea to help support a limited U.S. strike on Syria, if needed, defense officials said on Sunday.
The Nimitz carrier strike group, which includes four destroyers and a cruiser, has no specific orders to move to the eastern Mediterranean at this point, but is moving west in the Arabian Sea so it can do so if asked. It was not immediately clear when the ships would enter the Red Sea, but they had not arrived by Sunday evening, said one official.
"It's about leveraging the assets to have them in place should the capabilities of the carrier strike group and the presence be needed," said the official.
                  SNIP
The Nimitz carrier group had been in the Indian Ocean, supporting U.S. operations in Afghanistan, but was due to sail east around Asia to return to its home port in Everett, Washington, after being relieved in recent days by another aircraft carrier, the USS Harry S. Truman.
Given the situation in Syria, U.S. military officials decided to reroute the Nimitz and send it west toward the Red Sea, and possibly the Mediterranean, officials said.
The Navy has also sent the USS San Antonio, an amphibious ship with 300 Marines and extensive communications equipment on board, to join the five destroyers, diverting it from a previously scheduled mission that would have taken it farther west.
A second official said the San Antonio had been asked to serve as an afloat forward staging base, which could provide a temporary base for special operations forces, if they were needed. It could also assist with evacuations.

McCain Says Congress Blocking Strike on Syria ‘Would Be Catastrophic’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two Republican foreign policy hawks said Monday that President Barack Obama needs to make a strong case for attacking Bashar Assad’s Syria if he wants to win congressional backing.
At the same time, Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said it would be a mistake for Congress to reject Obama’s request.

I cannot believe how this is spiraling out of control. We have not seen any concrete evidence yet and a admission from the rebels that they are the one's who used the weapons that allegedly had been funneled in from Saudi Arabia.

My hope is Putin has the balls to back up his words or somebody within our own government can stop this before something like THE DAY AFTER happens.

I think those claims are as questionable as the ones from the administration. There aren't any good guys over there, and regardless of what gets done, it'll blowup in our faces. It isn't our problem, and we shouldn't be involved.

Now lets look at the bright side if ww3 breaks out. We can to back to smoking......until the radioactive ploom cloud does us in.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.
