Also when it comes to speed cameras, we won't take it lying down! Attack the motorists at your peril! Also a couple of journos getting short shrift pleases us too

I will also add, that the BBC leans heavily to the left, so the Guardian and its other leftist counterparts only have themselves to blame for not giving the Snowden story the coverage it deserved. it was all over the telegraph, just sayin.

The abuse of journalists should never be tolerated. That's a matter of civil rights, and anyone who doesn't give a shit deserves the police state they get.

For kicks, I just glossed over several sections of the Telegraph, and the closest thing I saw regarding news regarding the erosion of digital rights was a fluff piece saying internet users don't "feel" anonymous online.

      Edit:
and the money speed cameras cost is a triviality compared to the freedom lost through ubiquitous monitoring. The problem with them is you're tried and sentenced without the right of facing your accuser, and greater than that, it's monitoring the population's movements, and putting them in a database. The government shouldn't have that power.

It was all over the print version, trust me, I get it delivered every morning, the paper recycling was this week so I went through them all when putting them into the bags.

Also here in the UK, given our history with journalists (read phone hacking etc) there is a certain level of mistrust about, and the attitude of a lot of them means when they get done over, a fair number of people feel no sympathy with them, just how it is at the moment (I am sure you all love Piers Morgan as much as we do!). There are a lot of very good ones about, I class a few as personal friends.

i for one will have to delete all of PP's emails as I am flying from heathrow next week so don't want to be detained under anti terror legislation whilst they go through my phone, shit could hit the fan

The loony left in Britain is nuttier than a box of frogs and the BBC are part of that. I despise the way the BBC reports to the left. They've been rapped for it just recently.

I have absoloutely no problem with street surveillance. It has definately cut crime and anti-social behaviour. There are strict laws in place as to how material is kept and used. All it is is some security guard at a monitor that calls the Police if somebodys nutted somebody on the High Street. Road surveillance is different. Speed doesnt necessarilly kill whereas tailgating does but nothing is done about that because the motorway police get replaced by speed cameras.

I wouldn't travel with a computer that had the hard drive intact. It would be removed, and I'd boot off of a microSD card that was encrypted, and hidden on my person. I also wouldn't travel without my phone being encrypted. We have Constitution-free zones over here, where normal rules of search and seizure don't apply. Unfortunately, I live within the zone, but I don't expect government goons to be knocking down my door(yet). I wouldn't take my things to their door without protection though.

Seems I am the only one here who thinks that making drivers to keep the rules is a good thing... and that the speeding adrenaline junkie represents a bigger threat to my kids than a squadron of pedophiles.

Not specifically. I don't follow Apple. a quick search looks like there's a few apps, as well as builtin encryption routines. Unless the phone is jail broken though, you're limited to what's provided by Apple, and their store, and I don't think they have libre apps. Without being able to inspect the code, you're at the mercy of the devs to do their jobs right, and not place backdoors. Recent news shows that's a lot of misplaced trust.

It's not done for safety. Historically, they're used to generate revenue, and they're increasingly being used to track the movements of the population.

No - not the only one. It's fairly clear that speeding, especially in populated areas, is a massive problem. Here in the UK where we've got loads of speed camera systems - it is very effective in slowing the drivers down where the camera is and then they speed back up again! At the same time the local and national governments use the cameras to increase revenue.

My village suffers from being on a main road that drops down to 30 mph limit which the majority of drivers ignore until they get down to the camera at the other end of the village. And consequently there's no way I could imagine my kids having the freedom to walk to school on their own or go down to the playground with their friends unaided until they are much much older and that's a real shame!

It is possible to be both left wing in principle and also maintain a massive distrust of government and authorities in general - the smallest possible amount of taxation and intervention to counteract the natural selfish and destructive tendencies in human nature is what I crave in government. And speed cameras in their current form do not solve the problem, but serve to make people drive erratically and line the pockets of the councils.
