The biggest danger is everyone's a criminal. With pervasive monitoring, it then becomes an issue of enforcing laws when convenient. IOW, completely arbitrary.

I dont think we're feeling that here in the UK. There arent enough Police to be bothered with this mundane stuff and they're desperately trying to save money on prisons. We do have an extremely good intelligence network that we do in fact trust to protect us without bothering us and I think they do an excellent job. Public opinion matters very much in the UK. The government here knows that if it meddles too much there would be civil unrest. The Poll Tax riots are a good example. Internment without trial too....that went well. The government needs civil unrest like a hole in the head especially as the country is doing its damnedest to get back on track economically.

I dunno, maybe it is happening to you in the US. Hope you've got an armoury.

It's already happening. When you detain a journalist, and seize equipment under terrorism(bullshit word) laws, what's next? That leads to chilling speech. Maybe the next journalist won't be so quick to write about governmental misdeeds. Maybe the only voice will be government stooges spouting the party line, with just enough "edgy" commentary to keep the people placated.

All of this only addresses the government involvement. There's also corporate big data(which works with the government) that can deny you employment, increase your insurance rates, or open you up to private stalking.

Yeah, this is a problem that I have noticed. 'Private' companies are doing it.
