Squeezyjohn's Guide to understanding the British

SQUEEZYJOHN'S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE BRITISH
for those of you unfortunate enough to come from somewhere else ...

It has regularly struck me here on SnusOn that there are certain differences between the cultures of different nations, and especially between Britain and America ... which because of the common language can sometimes come as a bit of a shock as we attempt to have fun here. This thread is simply an attempt to educate the SnusOn world in the hope that you may come to understand us Brits on here a little better.

    The lesson starts here ...

Have you read it? Good! ... and for those of you with a short attention span, here is a short preçis of what is in the link above.

    Cheers,

    Squeezy

PS: I will pop in here from time to time and add more educational material as and when I find it.

I always understood the British, every single word, when I watched UpStairs, DownStairs. Then along came You Are Being Served and I had no idea what they were saying. Sigh.

      Thoroughly enjoyed the link SJ!!

The toilet seat and bike poll notice were classic

When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

        Hilarious LOL

6 looks like a crop circle, like to know the answer to 11, 19 could be Seattle, 31 could be Seattle too, as can 35 and 37

I watch BBCA all the time and British shows on Hulu, love them all. It always amazes me that there are actually people that cannot understand English people speaking (well there are some regions I doubt even English people understand).

Ive driven over that roundabout twice....I didnt have a clue. The feeling of terror when you approach it in rush hour is extraordinary. I just made sure nothing was coming from the right and hoped for the best.

Tesco is set to install hi-tech screens that scan customers' faces in petrol stations so that advertisements can be tailored to suit them, it has been reported.

The retailer will introduce the OptimEyes screen, developed by Lord Sugar's Amscreen, to all 450 of its UK petrol stations, in a five-year deal, according to The Grocer.

The screen, positioned at the till, scans the eyes of customers to determine age and gender, and then runs tailored advertisements.
Screw that. This is only a step towards facial recognition. They're trying to ease people in so they don't outright revolt.

            And what's this disaster?!

I think I'd rather walk than have to deal with that mess :^D

              That's Swindon's Magic Roundabout lxskllr!

Very close to where I live - Swindon is one of the worst dumps in the UK - but the roundabout is not that bad once you realise it's just 5 little roundabouts in a circle.

I have to admit though that once, late at night - I just went straight over the middle of it as there were no cars about at 3 in the morning.

It looks like it's way over engineered. Is all that really necessary? Wouldn't a simple clockwise path work just as well?

I hate the Hemel Hempstead roundabout too. Gives me the same feelings of near death.

Anyway ... let's not dwell on the ridiculous nature of some of our more eccentric road management systems ...

What does that teach us about British culture and approach to life?

My hunch is that every little bit of that roundabout makes absolute sense - and if used correctly by everyone it is a brilliant bit of town planning ... unfortunately it doesn't take in to account the fact that human beings can't really process that many bits of information at the same time and so it is flawed by unrealistic ambition. The fact that it is still there after 30 years shows a gritty determination to not give up on an idea even if it doesn't work in practice.

You can't get more British than that!

How the Irish and Indians react when the pressure's on. Funny as....First up, the Indians

Well Frosted ... nice try to hijack this thread about how to understand the British ... but I know which car I'd rather be sitting in!

"well ye marked it down ye bollix!" ha ha ha!

Is that a Clare accent? Sounds mighty familiar
