True enough. From the photos and video clips I saw, the Crimean people looked upon the Russians as friendly liberators not conquers.

      Ukraine is obviously divided.
The best scenario that I can see from my armchair for the Ukranians is the break up of the Ukraine. Let the west of Ukraine go to Europe and Russia gets to keep the east and the important Naval bases in the Crimea. But this might depend on the gas pipelines too.

The Ukranian and Russian soldiers were friends until a couple of days ago. They share the base so it must have been sobering to see your mate suddenly threaten to kill you.

I don't trust any of them, I have been to Russia and hated it, I have been to the Ukraine and disliked it. I really don't care what they do to each other so just let them get on with it, I have paint on the wall I need to watch dry.

Skell...the problem is that the UK government might make it your problem. Let's hope not.

What I mean to say is, WW1 happened over similar. Everybody was minding their own business and BAM...they were suddenly in a trench getting their brains blown out.

This situation really really sucks. The problem with international law never works. The UN doesn't work and the international community is powerless in front of Putin. Do you remember the cold war? Putin knows that the US is not as strong as it used to be. Finance is breaking down, the current generation sucks. The occidental people are now weak and Russians know we can't give them sanctions because the can totally bring us down with them and then be stronger than us economically speaking afterwards.

Superpowers cannot enter in direct conflict. Or else, everybody will freaking die on this planet.
Putin knows that nobody will send troops in Ukraine.

About the invasion for personnal/national interest, I think that we cannot really justify Russian international law breaking actions
by saying that the US did the same in the past. Look at WWII, how did it start? By means of acquiring land where (the german nationals were). Don't you see the similarities between
the Austrian annexation and the Crimean invasion? "We will protect our nationals".

We are about to see the shit hit the fan, really hard, really really hard. This not gonna end well.

Sorry about my bad english guys

And WWI started with over-reacting to Austrian warning shots by Serbians. Doesn't take much, and we do have some fools in power. Fingers crossed that nobody does anything stupid.

It could turn out that way my friend, but I honestly don't think it will. Ukraine might even split apart peacefully like Czechoslovakia.

If Putin gets what he wants without bloodshed it increases Russia's prestige. But America's credibility and reliability will take a big hit. Much of the world will view the contrast between America and Russia like the photo link wa3zrm posted above.

Guess the American Empire is going down. It has been going down for a long time, now we are seeing it. As a Canadian I support the US because we are brothers, if the US goes down, Canada is dead too.
Where I'm from, people say: When the U.S. catches the flu, Canada coughs.

There's a lot to be said for being unremarkable. I think it would great if the USA were like Switzerland, where no one is quite sure what it is we do, but have general good feelings about us, and no problems.
