It seems as if Ukraine is just trying to get Russia to back down their operations. I mean if we all think about it, the current president of Ukraine has said that he is going to punish all of these people and carry out all of these operations, but time and time again it never really happens. I think that what their strategy is is to keep saying that they're "ramping up their forces" to try to get Russia back in the negotiating room.

Either that, or they're actually serious and there's going to be a terrible conflict soon.. I surely hope that's not the case.

Oh wow, I guess my above statement was completely wrong about the whole situation.

"Ukraine launches 'special operation' against separatists"

I guess things are truly starting to get even more serious over there than it already is. This could ultimately mean numerous things. It could mean that the Kiev loyals in Ukraine will win back the "separatist" regions and everything will go back to normal (highly unlikely). It could also mean there would be a civil war because of this. Another thing that it could mean is that Russia will soon be getting involved to "protect ethnic Russians." It really is truly a terrible situation and one that doesn't look like it will turn out positively.

They are launching civil war. People who were not elected by anybody except by violent mob on a single Kiev square are sending hastily formed ethnically clean bloodthirsty troops against their own citizen. With mixed results so far. The first 5 APCs and 1 tank to arrive to the would-be battlefield promptly defected to local defense side...Sort of reminds me of Die Hard I: Now we have armor, ho-ho-ho

It's Russian armor now. This isn't a civil war. That's just what the west is calling it, so they don't have to get involved. Exactly what Putin wants. Pres Clinton promised that the west would defend Ukraine if they disarmed. They did, so what do we do now?

Who exactly should the West defend in Ukraine? And against whom? Legitimate government was overthrown in a violent putsch. Junta appointed its own president without actually asking any voters. The legitimately elected president had to flee the country. Now one ultranationalist wing is starting a campaign against regions that were placid while the country still had an elected leadership, but which revolt against the rule of a small unelected group.

What exactly should foreign troops do there? Patrol the streets of all Ukrainian towns and villages east of Don River? Guard all local government buildings, so that the junta could feel safe behind American machine guns? Carpet-bomb every place where protesters might hide? Force people to vote for the new leaders who fear elections more than Devil himself? Safeguard against referendums?

EDIT: I must be hungry. Didnยดt mean to sound so quarrelsome

                              ^^

Very important to remember this when thinking about the whole situation. Russia is not innocent - but the current Ukrainian government is unelected and took power via force.
