The following story from Metro outlining PPs skills at the craft table ... I also hear that Crow is looking for a bird in New Zealand!!

Glue’s a pretty boy then? Rare parrot chick hatches from crushed egg held together with sticky tape.

Ingenuity and lots of sticky tape and glue have helped a rare parrot chick survive against the odds.

When conservationists found a crushed kakapo egg in its mother Lisa’s nest, they may have been forgiven if they had decided to discard the specimen.

Instead, rescuers painstakingly pieced the broken shell back together using tape and glue – and after a long wait the chick has finally hatched.

It is the first kakapo chick to be born anywhere in the world for three years – and, having survived its big break, the birth has been dubbed ‘miraculous’ by rescuers who cared for it.

Ranger Jo Ledington was able to repair the egg as the membrane was still intact. The tiny chick, named Lisa One – for now, until its sex can be determined – is being kept in an incubator and receiving round-the-clock attention

Deidre Vercoe Scott, of the Kakapo recovery centre, on Codfish Island, New Zealand, where the chick was born, said: ‘It was touch and go for a few days but our expert team’s dedication paid off.’

Kakapos – also called owl parrots – are flightless birds native to New Zealand, where they have been considered an endangered species since the 1950s.

Lisa One’s birth brings the world’s total population of kakapos to 125.

Four more complete eggs found in Lisa’s nest are being kept in an incubator, and should hatch later this month.

Yes, very cool. Only 125 known in existence, nocturnal, can't fly but can climb tall trees and parachute down. Lives to an ave age of 95 years and up to 120 years.

idiots.....nall polish works much better to repair cracked eggs. It makes it stick together and seals it to boot. Any air getting in the shell will kill it. Tape can hinder the hatching process.

but wth do I know....after 30 years raising chicks.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

          There fixed....:encouragement:

I know zip about hatching, but that tape job on the egg in question looked like it could withstand a bomb going off ..... an exercise in structural rigidity, eh, but the little guy made it.

The tape job is the problem. A chick could never get out of that egg by itself with tape on it. A bit of nail polish applied right to the crack allows the chick to hatch naturally. Someone had to help that chick out of the shell or it wouldn't survive. That is a very dangerous and time conusmeing job. Most breeders wouldn't even attempt it even if they knew how to do it. Its so difficult I actually made a video of how to do it years ago. There are blood vessels involved that attach from the chick to the egg and if not properly and timely dealth with the chick will bleed to death. If you attempt to fully remove the chick before it done cooking you will lose it.....and many people are too anxious and go to rapidly and once it starts bleeding at a certain pace its too late to save the chick. Luckily I only needed to fix a few cracked eggs in my lifetime and they were able to hatch naturally. The chicks I assisted couldn't get out because the shell was too thick for the chicks to pip out of, so I had to go in and help em out or they wouldn't have made it. At least that outfit got it out ok. That's better than most could do...even for so called professionals.

Oh thats over 50 years of ogling. Ever since I was old enough to ogle,
