So, even if this passes, wouldn't possession still be against federal law?

Medical cannabis is against Federal law (the Federal system doesn't even recognise that cannabis has any medicinal benefit whatsoever), and how many states to date? Seventeen? Plus DC? And several more considering?

The Second Prohibition is nearing the end. Once my state flips the switch, the dominoes will be in motion.

You never hear male deputies complaining about female inmates.

Whats the point in legalizing it in a state but it's against federal laws?

A lot as a good majority of the arrests for marijuana come from the state. The feds dont usually get involved except for large quantities or sales.

How do the police react to marijuana use in Washington? It is not legalized here but the police pretty much turn a blind eye to it, unless you have a major grow-op. You might get asked to put your joint out or have your weed confiscated if the cop is in a bad mood that day. Maybe even a small fine. If legalization does fail there, it seems there is a significant portion of the population that realizes it is no big deal and consequences there should be relaxed. What should be illegal - and I've never understood how it is tolerated - is employers being able to test for recreational drug use. I just can't get my head around how that is allowed. If you can do your job its none of their damned business what you do in your free time.

Nice to see some jurisdictions blazing the trail (haha). Hope it works out for you.

A lot of employers are mandated by their insurance companies to conduct testing. One stoned employee can do a lot of damage.

Prominent Washington State Law Enforcers Explain Why Marijuana Should Not Be A Crime

Washington is one of three states that will take up a ballot initiative on Tuesday to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana. Support for the measure has been particularly widespread in the state, including among law enforcement officials, who have touted the initiative as a necessary fresh alternative to years of expensive arrests and prosecutions that have not achieved public safety or public health goals.

Washington and Colorado approve legalised cannabis (+ Massachusetts becomes #18)

                              By Allison Linn, NBC News

Voters in Colorado and Washington on Tuesday approved measures allowing adults to use marijuana for any purpose, NBC News projected, marking an historic turning point in the slow-growing acceptance of marijuana usage.

In Massachusetts, voters also approved an initiative allowing people to use marijuana for medicinal purposes, NBC News projected. In Arkansas, a similar initiative failed, according to NBC News projections.

In all, voters in six states were being asked to decide on a wide array of laws around legalizing marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes.

In three of those states – Colorado, Oregon and Washington – voters were deciding whether to allow people over 21 to use marijuana for any purpose.

In addition to Massachusetts, voters in Arkansas also are being asked to approve the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. In Montana, they are being asked whether to revamp an existing law to make it more restrictive.

The laws legalizing marijuana for recreational or other purposes could face federal challenges, because marijuana possession is still a federal crime. But so far, the Justice Department has declined to discuss how it might react if the laws pass.

Proponents say it’s about time pot was made legal and that it would create new avenues of tax revenue. But opponents say legalization would lead to more drug abuse and concerns about things like driving while impaired..

                                Congrats to Washington and Colorado.

Too bad for Oregon. We didn't have the multi-million dollar campaign.

However we will be ready next time.
