7 dead in California drive-by shootings called 'premeditated mass murder'

    By Joe Sterling, CNN

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS
    • The shootings occurred near University of California, Santa Barbara
    • Evidence suggests "premeditated mass murder," sheriff's spokeswoman says
    • The suspected gunman was one of the seven dead; seven others were injured

(CNN) -- Seven people, including a suspected gunman, died in drive-by shootings Friday night in a small Southern California college town, a rampage that authorities believe to be "premeditated," Santa Barbara County sheriff's deputies said Saturday.

The shootings occurred in Isla Vista near the University of California-Santa Barbara. Seven people also were being treated in a hospital for gunshot wounds or traumatic injuries, including at least one who was in surgery, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover.

"The sheriff's office has obtained and is currently analyzing written and video evidence that suggests this was a premeditated mass murder," Hoover said.

The violence began and ended within minutes, from 9:27 p.m. when shots were reported to around 10 minutes later when police discovered the body of the suspected gunman, CNN affiliate KEYT-TV said.

"Sheriff's deputies responded and found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds. As sheriff's deputies were attending to the victims and performing first aid, they were also receiving suspect information. Only minutes later, there were additional reports of shots fired in several other areas of Isla Vista," Hoover said.

KEYT reported that "witnesses described seeing a black BMW speeding through the streets, spraying bullets at people and various targets." Six minutes after the first emergency call, the suspected gunman traded fire with sheriff's deputies, and the vehicle plowed into a parked vehicle, Hoover said.

The suspected gunman was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound, she said, adding that it wasn't clear whether the death was self-inflicted or whether deputies killed the suspected gunman. A semiautomatic handgun was recovered, she said.

It appears the suspect acted alone, Hoover said.

"This is a very active and complex investigation involving approximately nine different crime scenes," she said.

Santa Barbara Sheriff Bill Brown called the suspect "severely mentally disturbed," according to KEYT.

Authorities searching for a motive were looking into a video posted on social media that contains a man's tirade against women who supposedly rebuffed him, Brown told the station. Hoover said the suspect has been preliminarily identified but his name won't be released until "a positive identification is made."

The identities of the victims won't be released until the next of kin are notified, she said.

Yep, that's the gist of it.

When incidents like this happen, some are quick to pin the blame on guns.

The reality is, we have a mental health problem in this country and few acknowledge it. It's far easier for someone to blame the gun and call for "gun control", than to address the issue of mental illness.

25% of a population suffer from a mental illness at any one time. Thats one in four. Obviously not all people with a mental illness are dangerous, but I would like to know out of that 25% how many are....and do they have access to firearms. If you have a history of mental illness in this country you cannot have access to firearms.

I will admit that I am one who is considered mentally ill. I suffer from PTSD & major depression, among other service connected disabilities from my time as active duty military. I do not own any firearms, but at the same time, I don't need any. I tend to stay home most of the time, since my issues keep me from being able to deal with most people a lot of the time. I honestly feel like some people and some media outlets like to throw the "mentally ill" classification around as a catch all excuse for poor judgement or a lack of morals/integrity by some individuals.

              Good point Staff.

I think in this case the lad was just a bellend.....but add the just a bellends on to people suffering a psychotic episode with access to firearms...could be a recipe for disaster. America suffers a lot of these tragedies. I knew somebody who suffered with psychosis...things could get pretty scary.

I'm fully sympathetic to what you struggle with btw. I'm ex army too...but I was lucky enough to pretty much serve in peacetime.

Thanks. I don't want it to look like I'm fishing for sympathy here, I just like to let people know that not everyone with these type issues cause these type issues when I can.

There are now reports of three male bodies stabbed to death found in Elliot Rodger's apartment.

"Elliot Rodger, 22, described as the British-born son of a film director, died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound in the black BMW car from which he had fired as he drove around an Isla Vista campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Police said that three of those killed had been stabbed to death while three were shot."

Kid from a rich family? Why didnĀ“t he just pay for sex? Seems from the last "revenge" video his only problem was he was still a virgin in 22. Big deal...

This guy grew up in the same cities as me, went to some of the same schools in my area etc. I know his type, faggy rich kids with first world problems. I read his manifesto, the guy had more issues than not getting laid, that's not what it was about. Someone hurt him as a child or something.

It brings up some interesting questions though, because he was getting the best psychiatric help money could buy, and he passed every background check, joined the gun registry, and did everything by the books. In the state with the nations strictest gun laws per the brady campaign, it did absolutely nothing to stop him. He even waited 30 days between purchases as it mandatory by law. Plus he killed more with a knife and with a car than by shooting, yet articles like the one Joe mentioned seem to harp on the shooting component. Its funny because his knife killings went undetected, he was only outed once he started shooting. Could have gotten away with a lot more if he had just stuck to the knife.

                      What a nutter.
