I thought only Texas did this sorta thing...

california voters consider seceding to create nation's 51st state

Come June 3, voters in California's northern counties who have complained about being neglected by the state Capitol for years, will have the opportunity to take their intention of forming the nation's 51st state, "Jefferson," one step closer to becoming a reality.
Voters in Del Norte and Tehama countie --with a population consisting of roughly 91,000 residents--will decide if they would like to join Glenn, Modoc, Siskiyou and Yuba counties in forming an advisory board to explore in greater depth the logistics surrounding the creation of "Jefferson" state, according to the Associated Press.
As many at 16 Northern California counties could opt into the effort to secede from the Golden State amid complaints from the region's residents who are fed up that they "have no representation whatsoever," citing the fact that there is only one state senator for 11 of the region's counties compared to 20 in the greater Los Angeles and 10 in San Francisco's Bay Area, the AP notes.

In this case they are talking about creating a new state. What Texas likes to pretend to intend to do is actually create its own country.
Truthfully California seems to be too big of a state to begin with. The talks of this state splitting has been going on for years. My parents always tell me all the people who would talk about that sort of thing when they were stationed there back in the 80's.

But...Jefferson state? Why not North California or something more creative than Jefferson State? Virginia seems to already have a stranglehold on naming things after Jefferson.

Thunder_Snus is right. From time to time there is crazy talk about succeeding from the union. Which is ludicrous. We would be one of the smallest countries in the world right next door to a super power that we just pissed off.
My mind is like a bad neighborhood. I don't need to go there alone.:biggrin-new:

Au contraire tall texan. Texas would not be a particularly small country. It would be larger than France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and about 180 other countries. Texas seceding might be bad idea for many reasons but size isn't one of them.

I know the feeling but it sure enough is huge. The area of the Houston metroplex alone is the same size as the state of Massachusetts.

I believe it was a place in Plano? that booed Bill Nye off stage for saying the moon reflected the sun.....some time I just don't know about Texas. I have the opportunity to take a position with my company just outside of Dallas but I really don't know nor care much about trucks or creationism which seems to be a gun drawing points for Texans from most things I read/hear.

I don't know if its the water or the heat but things do get stupid out here. One thing is that for some reason Texans do tend to be more arrogant than the average American and at times they become arrogant even when they are wrong.

Nei Bruder. No JFKs or MLKs there.....Jefferson jefferson jefferson. You can't turn around without seeing a road sign a school a restaurant or a billboard for something that isn't named after Jefferson.
