What’s the Deal with… Butter in Coffee

People have taken to putting butter in their coffee.
The practice is polarizing—it sounds awesome to some, disgusting to others—but really, it’s not about how the mixture tastes. “Clarified butter is a great source of energy, satiates you: I get the draw,” coffee writer Oliver Strand told us on Twitter. “But it’s more about diet than flavor.”
    Let’s discuss.
Where It Comes From: Putting butter in morning tea has long been a “thing” in Tibet. “The heart and soul of Tibet” is butter tea, chef Vikas Khanna told us. (Khanna’s cookbook, Return to the Rivers: Recipes and Memories of the Himalayan River Valleys, was nominated for a James Beard Award this year.)
It’s almost exactly what it sounds like: tea, brewed normally, and then served with a float of yak butter and Himalayan salt. “It is hard to drink initially—it’s so strong!—but it’s the best thing Tibet taught me.”
It was Dave Asprey, though, who most recently imported the idea to States, switching the tea to coffee, adding some other ingredients, and branding it Bulletproof Coffee. Then came the attention from Paleo diet experts and followers of the Traditional Foods movement.

clarified butter also known ghee i think. It's very popular in Indian cuisine . I think it is part of this avoiding carbohydrate's concept . I can't say how replacing carbohydrates with high cholesterol foods is that great though

I'd be afraid that my Irish Whiskey would curdle it.

Don't forget the MCT oil along with the butter. The MCT oil promotes high energy, fat loss, and brain function. It will make you feel better and get thinner. It also makes the coffee have a better feel in your mouth, but coffee with just butter is ok too. The butter should be salt free and from grassfed cows. This little concoction won't work without a blender or hand frother to mix properly. Ghee is not as tasty as butter but works better for those with casein allergies, as the whey protein and casein is removed when butter is converted into ghee.

Adding cream, milk, nut milk, sugar, or honey WRECKS the affects – The glorious effects of drinking Bulletproof® Coffee, like better brain function, increased energy, and normalized weight, can be canceled out when things like cream, milk, nut milk, sugar, and honey are added to the recipe. Each of these foods change insulin response, stop autophagy, or cause inflammation. These physiological/biochemical changes in your body equals a foggy brain, hunger, and fat gain. No thank you! http://www.bulletproofexec.com/bulle...ffee-and-more/

I doubt if my cardiologist would endorse it. When he does, I'll give it a shot. Until then, I'll keep my coffee black. Wouldn't want to mess with the awesome regularity I've got going on now.

Represent!! Couldn't have phrased it better myself. For me, four cups of bulletproof coffee, 4 tbsp. butter, and a couple glugs of MCT oil, have me set up. I am still flying - it is currently almost 2 pm. I haven't eaten anything today, aside from my supplements I had after the coffee. Not at all hungry, not at all tired.

To echo what piks101 said below, DO NOT DO THIS if you are eating carbs/sugar in the morning. On this diet, you are almost constantly in ketosis - that means your body burns fats first. If your stomach runs out of fuel, you are in ketosis, so your body starts to burn fat from your body. = not hungry.

Sugar, or carbs which convert into sugar, will wreck this effect. Carbs are OK later in the day, like some white rice, but you want to stay the hell away from sugar.

I doubt he would as most are pushing low fat, whole grains, no cholesterol and quick to prescribe stains for the remainder of a patients life.

I felt awesome on a strict ketosis diet but then it stopped being as effective. Not everyone flourishes on a ketosis diet but I think it is still beneficial to do a 30 day cycle for a cleanse and continue as long as you are benefiting. The MCT oil is converted by your liver into ketone, so I can get the benefits of ketones without avoiding carbs entirely and having to stay in ketosis.

I'm not sure dietary cholesterol translates to blood cholesterol. In any case, I do what I want, and I'll die when I die. Has to happen some time...

True. Eat a balanced diet, a little of everything and not too much of anything, and get some exercise. My doctor is good with that. I'll listen to my doctor.

If you are happy with your doctor then that is what is important. However, you won't really know unless you ask him.
