When Surge soda—the impossibly bright neon-green, highly caffeinated, sugar-rich, citrus flavored, carbonated Coca-Cola beverage—all but disappeared in 2002 it did not take long for fans of the stuff to get to work on bringing it back. One year after its disappearance, a 25-year-old Web designer in Pennsylvania launched savesurge.org in an attempt to call fans to action.
Nearly ten years later, in 2011, the Surge Movement started a Facebook page. To date this page has more than 130,000 likes, which is not much by today’s standards but is more than enough to call it a movement. It is easy to see how much people miss the stuff because just last year, this Facebook group raised $3,800 through crowd funding to post a billboard about a half mile from the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta pleading the company to resurrect the neon soda.
