Sweden plans to expel up to 80,000 asylum-seekers: minister

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Sweden intends to expel up to 80,000 migrants who arrived in 2015 and whose application for asylum has been rejected, Interior Minister Anders Ygeman said Wednesday.

"We are talking about 60,000 people but the number could climb to 80,000," the minister was quoted as saying by Swedish media, adding that the government had asked the police and authorities in charge of migrants to organise their expulsion, likely spread over several years.

Staff at a home for refugee children in southern Sweden were forced to barricade themselves in a room on Wednesday night, after 19 young men in their care rioted and attacked them with weapons.
The employees were only freed when a squad of police cars arrived at the centre and arrested the alleged ringleaders behind the riot.
“There was a violent riot at the accommodation centre for unaccompanied refugee children,” Ingela Crona from the local police in Kalmar told Expressen. “They broke loose, and a total of 19 people banded together and did this.”
According to Expressen, the young men were carrying makeshift weapons.
John Nilsson, also with the local police, told the Barometern newspaper that the riot had started after staff refused a request from one of the home’s residents.
"One of them was refused to buy sweets and became furious with the staff member. He collected together around fifteen friends and the staff were forced to shut themselves in while they broke windows and did what they liked."
Police last night seized two of the young men. One, a 16-year-old boy suspected of starting the riot, is still being held. The other has been released.
The local municipality in Emmaboda, near Kalmar, which oversees the home, has moved some of the children to another location to calm down the situation.
Problems at the hundreds of homes for unaccompanied minors which have opened across Sweden over the last year have been drawing more attention this week after one worker, 22-year-old Alexandra Mezher, was stabbed to death at a home in Mölndal, near Gothenburg, on Monday.
More than 35,000 unaccompanied refugee children came to Sweden in 2015, all but 2,847 of whom are male.

Strained to the breaking point by the largest per capita influx of Muslims claiming to be “refugees,” Sweden’s government is finally planning to vet and even expel those invaders who are not legitimately escaping the threat of death. If, that is, they can find them (which is a big if).

The U.K. Guardian reports:

Sweden is gearing up to reject up to 80,000 people who applied for asylum in the country last year, as many as half of whom will be forced to leave against their will, according to official estimates.

The interior ministry has called on police and migration authorities to prepare for a sharp increase in deportations, and to arrange charter flights to expel failed asylum seekers to their country of origin. Sweden is also approaching other EU countries, including Germany, to discuss cooperation to increase efficiency and make sure flights are filled to capacity, it said.

The country received more than 160,000 asylum applications last year – by far the biggest influx in the EU as a proportion of the population. Between 60,000 and 80,000 of them will be rejected, the interior minister, Anders Ygeman, told Swedish media on Thursday.

The revelation that a large proportion of asylum seekers will be turned down, and as many as half of failed applications will be forcibly ejected, sends another signal to refugees that Sweden is no longer extending the warm welcome it offered to them just a few months ago.
