    The hunting is going well.....

If you are sensative about hunting please stop reading now.

Youth day, my daughter and I saw 5 deer. She didn't kill any of them because she was waiting for big pappa buck to come out. He never did but we had a good time anyway. Got to watch some squirrels and raccoons play.

I actually saw a pair of roadrunners too! They're here in East TX but a rarity to see them. Very cool looking birds.

Opening day I was with a friend and his son. (daughter was busy doing other stuff) I saw 8 deer that day and some very nice ones to boot. The 8th one now resides in a cooler. It was a nice, heavy bodied white tail doe. Good quick kill on her from about 85 yards out.

I didn't post pictures because of our non hunting friends. Don't want to offend anyone.

    congratulations!

So nice that you pass on the conservation life to the next generation.

Just out of curiosity how much did it weigh?

Where I live deer run pretty big. Where I hunt in the Appalacian mountains of PA along the Allegheny river some of the deer look more like large dogs. No farms to feed from and the terrain is more rugged.
My uncle is a Pennsylvania game commisioner. I haven't been out in a few years due to work. I've got twelve deer under my belt only one was a buck.

How did your daughter react to field dressing?

Good luck to all the other sporting snusers!

        good groceries
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Congratulations sentry. I haven't been hunting in over 25 years. I really should get back into it...

            COME ON....

what i that special smiley... this thread is worthless without pics...

I dont know how to get it up here real quick but we need some picks of some venison!

Unfortunatly, hunting is one of my favorite passtimes, but this year I am crazily busy with school, I have to get it done because I am now going on 5 years and dont even have an associates degree, so hunting was the first thing to give up.

My parents own 70 acres here in norther MI, where the deer really dont get to large, but the hunting pressure in the neighboring areas has led to a massive increase in the huge bucks on thier property. We acually have so many large buck that seek refuge on their land it is hard to believe that I can pass up the opprotunity.

My idea is to let them feel safe for a couple years while I finish school, then come in as the slayer and thin out a few.

I always have to add in hunting posts, and I know some will thrash me for this, but rifle hunting is cheating. It is not hunting in my oppinion. If you can shoot a dear or other animal from more than 50 yeards away you have the unfair advantage. Obviously I am a bow hunter and learned through killing a few deer with a rifle that there is not much challenge. I do realize that banning rifle hunting will be hard but it needs to be done. Shotgun only zones have proven to be very useful and should be extended in my opinion.

But anyway, a kill is a kill is a kill. All are exciting, not as exciting as a bow kill but in the end there is meat in the freezer. I must encourage all of you hunters that have not tried bow hunting to just give it the chance, you will find more thrill in seeing three times as many deer 20 yards from you and not gettting a shot than you will killing a deer with a rifle.

Regardless, congrats and PS.... SEND ME THE TENDERLOINS!!!!

              Thanks for the congrats everyone,

The doe probably went 120-130 lbs just guessing. I didn't weigh her. Sorry ops:

My youngan is no stranger to dressing out an animal she's quite near pro status! (sentry gleems with pride ) She's going for her first deer this year but has helped me dress out a few in the past.

And rollinred, you'll have to fight my wife and daughter over the tenderloins!! lol They are going to make great BBQ! I'll post a pic IF nobody minds (they shouldn't if they read the first sentence of this post.) As far as bow vs rifle it's not really an issue to me. They have their advantages & disadvantages but both put meat in the freezer which is my goal. I'm not really a "trophy antler hunter". Not to say a big rack isn't nice - especially on the female homosapien species.

You could link the pics...

I haven't been hunting in years; come to think of it, I haven't even fired a weapon at all since the military.

On a related note: When is Ted Nugent going to run for office? He's been talking about it for years now....

I might be a massive liberal, but I don't mind hunting as long as it's for food or population control.

Ok I linked a pic of my doe hanging and another picture of a couple of button bucks I was watching in the stand. I think the button bucks pics turned out VERY good and just wanted to share. Oh, I had to reduce the image quality just a tad but they still look good through the links.

In Texas, it's too hot to just "hang". The meat will spoil rapidly so you you have to quarter it and bleed/ age it in a cooler. I usually age it for about 5 days. Then process and freeze. I should be getting my spices soon. I got some hot breakfast sausage, green onion and fajita marinade.. MMMMmmm MMMMmmm good!

Sounds tasty! Must be quite rewarding having all that food.

Never been deer hunting, but hopefully going sometime soon with one of my buddies. I've been duck hunting since I was a kid, and that is my passion. I got a Benelli Nova 12 ga. a year or so ago, but have barely had a chance to use it
Couldn't go much last season due to other obligations, and it's not looking good this year either. The leases I hunt on are in Cameron Parish in SW Louisiana, and they got pretty messed up from hurricane Gustav and Ike. Hopefully going trap shooting soon though, so that should get rid of this itch on my trigger finger.
