If you want something small to start with, Hayek's Road to Serfdom or, smaller yet, Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom are both good to get your feet wet in that area of economics.

And you don't have to put down Asimov  He's on my bookshelf too. Have you read any of the Dune series?

General Zod: Why do you say this to me, when you know that I will kill you for it?
My friend from school used to repeat lines from General Zod, especially that one.

              Zero,

Funny you should mention Dune. A new co-worker's son is enthralled with Dune, probably age 12. She felt that I would like it since he loves Asimov. I mentioned Orson Scott Card's Enders Game to her. He is excited about that series. I talked to my father last night and he suggested all of the works you have suggested. Seems he has been reading or seeing quotes from those authors. I almost always take his advice with regards to literature. I suppose if both my father and you make many of the same suggestions how can I go wrong?

Dune is pretty heavy reading for a 12 year old.

I feel like a bit of a nerd but I read most of the Dune series between 10 and 13, Don't feel so geeky now. Anyway me does not like the continuation of the Dune universe by Brian Herbert and that other chap. Almost as bad as the Star Wars prequels.

I really loved Dune, but the follow-ups were disappointing to me. I never even got close to the Brian Herbert stuff.

I read a lot of sci-fi too when I was that age (still do). I remember really liking Ender's Game and all the sequels. My favorite from that time was a book called Nova by Samuel R. Delaney. I read it again a couple of years ago for the third time in my life, and each time I read it it's very different. The first time was totally magical. I think that there's an advantage to reading when young, because a lot of the imagery is much more fantastical then it is when you're an adult.

I also remember truly loving the Amber series by Roger Zelazny. It's more fantasy than sci-fi. And of course Lord of the Rings, which was completely mind altering at that age.

Oh, and Sheri S. Tepper's early books like Grass. AWEsome.

                      way to stay on topic...........lol
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.
