i might get a raise not sure. i am a union electrician. i moved to vegas this year and doubled my paycheck so i have no complaints. anyone wanting to get an education could consider an apprenticeship in a trade. i don't have anything against college but i know it isn't for everyone. also lots of trades make a nice paycheck with good benefits. i am the only one in my family without a college degree, and i make a lot more money than anyone in my family.

How much if any does an apprenticeship cost? Or do you get paid while you learn? If young adults are going to get a college education it better pay off well or you will more than likely get stuck with a large student loan bill that you can not pay off with a meager $30,000 a year job. I told my wife that our kids are either going to be an electrician, plumber, HVAC or something along those lines so that they can make good money without starting out life in a financial hole. The only issue that I have about a person not going to college is the life experiences and friends that they would miss out on....and all the fun. God knows I had a blast and would not trade it, but for severe introverts it might not be worth the hassle.

US military is getting 3.9% raise for fiscal 2009. A whole whooping $72 a month for me lol

Wasn't sure where to put it, since your choices eliminated anything between 3 to 5 percent :? So I picked 3% or lower, since it's closer to three

Same can be said of the military; I had a good time....sort of like college except a few more rules and responsibilities. 8)

On a side note, at least I started 401K on this last check. Better late than never I guess.

I always forget about the military. My dad would agree wholeheartedly that the military is probably one of the best educations out there. I did not think that was why my cup of tea. I don't/didn't like the idea of being the government's property: force you to take drugs of unknown composition, die for some ****ed-up reason to have a war..... I can not think of a war that the U.S. should have been starting at the turn of the 20th century and beyond. Sorry to include WWII which is bound to offend many people in the U.S. and beyond. The vote-buying Roosevelt was an evil man, but loved by many since he inspired them. I will stop now since I am ranting....

The city I work for did a $110k study to find out we were underpaid about 22%. So we got a 3% raise in October and supposed to get about a 17% raise in April. That will translate to between 300-400 a month raise.. I can't wait untl April lol. The extra money will be very welcomed.

Not to be rude, which I am not known for, but all those figures are relative. As an example, how can a supervisor of a township that has little work to perform compare his/her wages with another? A township in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan versus one in Detroit should be paid the same? The cost of living of someone in the U.P. versus the cost of living in Detroit? I think these studies are done by people searching for pay increases. If the studies include non-administrative job, which I assume your is, than the wage increase are probably much more deserved. I hope you get the raise. I write this because it pisses me off when a local official does a study like this to receive a higher wage when they compare there wages with another position of the same title in a different county or district. Why don't these studies compare how much work they actually perform...then the administrators of the same title can determine that they are both ****ing overpaid.

Sly, I see what you're saying, but I have to be fair here. I watched the pay study process and all cities compared were comparable, and in the same state. They compared services offered, city size etc. We had to fill out surveys on what our job was and such. Then the "non biased" third
party contractor "tempered" the comparison with the housing market, cost of living and such.

The last pay study was about 12 years ago or so and the raises wern't nearly as big 3-4%.... I think the pay studies have some merit and are RELATIVELY unbias. Turnover does cost a city big and if they can't be competative, they have to re-hire, and train employees all the while losing productivity. Then the employee goes to bigger city and gets bigger pay with their experience and training that a smaller city gave them. (I can't blame a person for bettering themselves)

For what it's worth, i'm just a firefighter and the vast majority of raises went to clerks, secrataries, police and fire. Not admin.

Edit Note: The city council who has to approve all these raises are elected volunteers.... Food for thought.

                      sentry103,

I should have held my tongue. I just get so disturbed at the local governments that pull certain things. We had a township supervisor (not living where I am now) that worked maybe 20 hours a week taking down about $40,000. He had enough time for a full-time job as well, yet he felt he deserved a $3000 a year raise. I was referring to those sort of people. I am quite sure that the study did not include cost of living, nor job responsibilities, just title. He got the raise by vote at the annual meeting by making sure all of his family and friends were there. As I said in my previous post, I was pretty sure you deserved a raise since your job can be much more easily quantified for the work you perform. On the other hand, a township supervisor that may not do as much work as his colleagues may be just deceiving the public.

Agreed Sly, nothing pisses me off worse than an elected official who betrays the public trust. I am held to a higher standard just because I'm a public servant. I think elected officials should be held to the highest standards possible. A crooked politician should be thrown under the jail when caught. But u know as well as I do most people don't give it a second look. They are being poor citizens in my opinion.

Hooyah, Bush-raise! I guess I can't say he never did anything for me...

BMasiak...$72 bucks, huh? E-4 over 2? I did the math and that seems about where you should be. Just guessing. Gosh we military-types are nerds. Or at least we military-types on subs are. It's somewhat depressing to realize that you're just a glorified computer-geek with a 9mm.

You got it! I'm more excited about my 3 year mark raise in July though  You're not nuke, are ya? Man, those guys rank up something fierce, but they are a bright bunch 8)

Nope, not a nuke. I'm a Sonar Tech. And yeah, I hit 3 years in June...still trying to decide whether to reenlist or not. Plus, next year, I get a 150 buck increase on my sea pay...that's pretty badass.

As far as nukes or submariners go...people all say they're smart, but if the dumbasses I work with are the [i]smart[i] ones...well, I just feel really sorry for everyone else.

I think you get smart people everywhere in the military...just infrequently in the same command together.

Duh, I should've deducted your sonar from your original post lol.

Damn, we're month apart huh. So what are ya now? STS3? If not, you should be coming up on it soon, right? 8)

And you're right, you find your smart ones and dumbasses everywhere, but to finish Nuke school, ya gotta have it pretty together
