Corncob pipes, from some of the more seasoned pipe smokers, are rated to be some of the best to use because they are cheap ( less then 20 bucks ) and do not smoke wet.

The pipe I use is a briar and because its almost shaped like a sherlock saliva and tar mix together and you get a gurgling sound when nearing the bottom.

Not a problem, just causes you to have to relight quite a few times toward the end of the bowl.

NOTE: PIPE TOBACCO SMOKING IS LESS DANGEROUS THAN CIGS. THE RISK OF ORAL AND THROAT CANCER ARE PRESENT BUT SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN IN CIGS. PIPE TOBACCO IS NOT INHALED AND YOU JUST PUFF ON IT. IT IS QUITE A GREAT DEAL LESS HARMFUL THAN CIGS. BUT THEN AGAIN BURNING MATERIAL LIKE TOBACCO IS HARMFUL IN ALL REGARDS TO HEALTH.

I use snus primarily still, but i smoke my pipe in the morning and evening. Usually twice a day. the smell is great ( as long as you get an aromatic blend, some english blends can have quite an offensive odor.

The wife doesnt mind me smoking in the house as long as its a pipe.

All of you interested should try it and just google how to break a new pipe in and the dangers of ruining your pipe if you smoke it too hot.

I bought a cheapish briar today, £25. It has a lovely grain. Got some Kentucky Nougat and Black Cherry tobaccos for it. I think flake tobacco is probably normal here for pipes.

So far I quite like it, except I'd feel foolish to do it in public right now, until I'm better at using it. It reminds me a little of smoking a cigar, there's the similar tingling numbness on my tongue.

        A small correction. :?
The juice that forms in the shank of the pipe is almost entirely from the moisture in the tobacco. The wetter the tobacco the more juice.
Besides this one, another good forum to try is BrothersofBriar.

I recall learning that moisture can also build when the tobacco is smoked too hot. That was downside to pipe smoking for me, all the gurgling from even dry, premium, non-aromatic tobacco.

My wife and I spent 18 years sitting outside smoking together and sinc I quit we don't talk nearly as much as before.

I have smoked a pipe on occasion so today I went and picked up a briar one so we could sit and chit chat a bit without me being distracted by not doing anything.

It smokes nice and the tobacco shop in town has a nice blend called 1Q that smelled wonderful!

The upside, my wife loves the smell of pipe smoke and since I'm not inhaling, I don't feel like I am cheating :P
