I'm a member of the International Association of Heat & Frost Insulators and Asbestos Worker's Union; Local 1, Saint Louis, MO. 3rd year apprentice. I'm also happily married and a proud father of an 8 month old little girl.

Nice to have a union man on the forum. I worked for 30 years for a labour union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

      Solidarity forever!

I'm in my last year and a half of school (I'll be graduating after next fall - it should have been this summer but I ended up having to drop a class because I took on too big of a course load considering my work schedule). My bachelors degree will be in physics.

Once I graduate I'll be working in law enforcement - nothing at all to do with physics, but that's okay. Bachelor's degree = more pay, and I love physics anyways. I ended up choosing this degree because my dad told me to explore anything I might be interested in outside of law enforcement before I really settle on it (my dad is a police officer). I considered a lot of things, from engineering, teaching and/or researching physics, medical school, and in the end I didn't find anything worth doing that I would enjoy more than law enforcement.

I sit in an office and eat scope/requirements documents and spit out code.

I'm also married to a woman who's kind and understanding about my snus obsession. We have two sons.

I also have two cats who alternate between lethargy and frenetic bursts of playful aggression against each other.

I'm a student who's A-levels are coming next year. I'm extremely bored about this school-shit but at least I don't have to deal with it so long anymore. After the sixth form I'm going to the army and I'm not so enthustiasted abouth that either. After that I don't know what the **** I'm doing with my life. :?

The true geek that I am, I had to dig up and read through some of your publications  The stuff on formulaic language is fascinating - maybe this is a silly question, but does anyone in the field (or yourself, perhaps) cross-collaborate with artificial intelligence groups? They seem like they would go together like peas and carrots. I'm sure you must have read Hofstadter's GEB (and if not I highly recommend it!) - puts me in mind of his "chunking".

Yeah, Zero, the formulaic language people are into computational linguistics and all that, work with voice recognition tech people, etc., probably AI too, plus it all stems from language corpus analysis. Me, I am more focused on formulaic language and second language acquisition. Chunking, indeed!
