When did I ever say anything about smuggling weapons?

As far as where I got my info on Canada, I got it from a documentary that I watched (I forget the name but it primarily focused on columbine(sp?))

Anyways, Sure.. If you search google, you WILL find stories of people who used legit guns to commit crimes/kill people, but you can't sit there with a straight face and tell me that more people aren't killed by black-market guns on a daily basis than those killed with legally registered weapons (wielded by their registered owner).

I bet the guy that broke into our fellow member PaulWall's apartment the other night and shot him and his dog was using a legally registered pistol too

Excellent, thanks! I am beginning to ski quickly, which is a mixed blessing... I keep recalling this one case where a skier was convicted of reckless murder after killing an old guy by means of a fractured skull.

Sometimes, being a lawyer makes life less fun.

Man, I wish I could still ski. I used to go out to Salt Lake City every year before I destroyed my knee.

I keep wanting to make the trip again, but I'm affraid of locking up half way down the slope and doing even more damage to myself (or someone stuck in my path)

            Where did you go?

              Sorry about the knee.

This time, we went up to Mount Hood (just outside Portland, Oregon). It was pretty nice, but my all-time favorite continues to be Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Whistler sounds awesome too, but I've yet to make it that far north...

As for Salt Lake City, I've never been there. Insane cultists scare me...

Ah, I see your mistake. You need to consider the question of causation.

Sure, criminals tend to get guns illegally (i.e. stealing them or buying them from a non-licensed source).

Now, take a step back. Where doe THESE stolen/purchased firearms come from? Answer: the vast majority comes from perfectly legal sources. Think about it: were I forced to be a thief, I would certainly steal as many of your guns as I could upon breaking into your dwelling. Then, I would sell most of them to my criminal buddies and use the rest for nefarious purposes.

It is, basically, a closed system. Law-abiding citizens buy guns; criminal low-lives either buy or steal said guns from said citizens. Rinse, repeat. The cycle can only be broken by outlawing firearms altogether.

                  OK, I'll bite.

So, I take it you're a defense attorney, so I'm sure that you've used that same argument a million times before. "But ladies and gentlemen of the jury, if poor Mr. Williams hadn't been served all those drinks by the bartender, he wouldn't have been drunk enough to kill those people in his SUV. 'Twas the bartender that killed those people, not Mr. Williams!"

Propose a way for us to completely ban all guns, in such a way that no criminal on earth would ever be able to find one anywhere in this country. You can't, unless you suggest some Draconian future where the government has the right to come into our homes for no reason and completely toss our belongings in search of... oh wait, I forget, you're communist.

So "ban ALL guns so that it's harder for a criminal to steal one from a law abiding citizen" is the best you can come up with, huh? OK. Let's get rid of cars because unlicensed drivers have too easy an access to them, and last I check they kill more US citizens than guns do every year.

Point well taken, but that will never happen. And even IF (and thats a big if) it were to happen, the criminals would find another way to get weapons. Weapons (if outlawed) would begin to distribute by the same means of cocaine or meth. Coming into the country under the radar hand-in-hand as part of the illegal drug trade.

Frankly, we could go Pro/Con endlessly but it won't change anything.

Hah! If that defense worked, half of my clients would now be home. Sadly enough, voluntary intoxication by any substance is not even considered a mitigating circumstance...

There was one famous case about it. So, an old man goes out picking mushrooms, whereupon he meets a young couple doing the same. They become quick friends, pick mushrooms, sell them... By the evening they are bar-hopping, liquor-purchasing, and generally getting completely shit-faced...

Next morning, the cops find a car in a ditch. The young ones are in the front, both dead with bullet wounds in their heads. The old man is in the back, screaming gibberish and holding the gun. Despite his protests, he is convicted on 2 charges of first degree murder.

So yeah... the defense does not work.
