My uncle and dad always told me if you have to draw, make sure it's to kill. You only get one chance because they'll be happy to do the same. I'm incline to agree.

Your dad and uncle sound like wise men.

The third wise man would be Maj. Honan. Retired USMC Major, retired Massachusetts State trooper, former night tac and now active day tac in 4th Btn here at El Cid. He's given me some of the best advice during rough times that got me through them and coming out on top.

-"Is there something wrong with it? Then don't mess with it."
-"So lemme get this strait. She's acting like a lunatic, making you miserable, and bringing down your grades. Why the hell are you dating her, you numbskull?"
-"Let me tell you something. Slow big bullets will always punch harder than a small fast bullet. **** the 9mm, take the .45."
-"Why would you need a new car? To say it's new?"
-"Let me tell you something. Technically it's hazing to make them do more than 30 push ups because that's the ****ing rules. But you gotta do 42 to pass the damn PT test. Just don't make them pass out when you're PTing them, got it?"
-"I told you not to mess with it, didn't I?"
-"You're still dating that broad?! I oughta throw you off of fourth division (fourth floor)."

Did your dad smoke cigars nonstop too? Maj. Honan was never without a stogie in hand. Think the happiest I've seen him is when I gave him a Padron out of nowhere.
