    Lent

I'm Armenian Catholic, and I'm giving a few things up for Lent. Is anyone else doing the same?

    Things given up:
Soda and painkillers (Ibuprofen and the sort)

The second one makes sense if you're a gym rat who works out with a bunch of jarheads and hooah daddies who don't know when to quit.

I'm not religious but it would be nice if I could at the least cut back on how much I play video games.... I know, sad.

Now I just have to implement my wish.

Oh my, what a topic for a snus forum. I don't have anything againt this topic at all. Its just seems weird to find it here.

Anyway, I am american Catholic also, went to the schools and fully believe in my Lord. But I pretty much keep it to myself. As a matter of fact I probably wouldn't even comment on this thread but I was compelled to after reading the first post.

ShaulW, IMHO, I don't believe that we are meant to give up meds that are needed. Lent is a time when we are to show our love for God by suffering for Him as He did for us. Thats the short and simple of it. Over the centuries it has turned into a "lets give this up for Lent" kind of thing. While there is nothing wrong with that, I must say that I don't believe that medicine should be avoided during Lent. Medicine is for your body or your mind. Your body is the temple of God and you must do all that is possible to protect it. Giving up your ibruprofen and it benefits would be contrary to these beliefs. Sure you will suffer some but it will be at the expense of Gods temple. Give up beer, oral sex, picking your nose during Lent. Or go big time and give up snus for 40 days as that may be your biggest sacrifice to God that He will appreciate the most.

BTW, instead of giving something up during Lent you can offer a kind hand to someone in need. GO TO CHURCH, donate daily to some charity, there are many things to do [or not do]. Or, if you drive to work thru an area where this same homeless person everyday is at the corner looking for handouts simply give him a couple of buck each day. That would be a great scarifice you can preform in Gods name. The last day of Lent stop and mention to the fellow just why you have been so generous with him daily. You can also mention that you may or may not help him out anymore, why you did in the first place and that there are others to help out. You might just have helped someone beyond your belief, in several ways. Just a thought.

I'm not a Jesus freak, or push religion upon people but I just could not help responding to your post in this fashion. Think about it. Thanks

I now return you to your regularily schedueled thread.

end of sermon, go in peace
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Well, I am not Catholic, but I am Christian. I figured I'd join in on the Lent thing and I decided to give up all the extra work I do.

For example, I worked 96 hours last week.

We will see how it goes!

True, medicine is a need, but I don't really need to grab some Bayer when it's just some muscle soreness from a workout. If I were pulling a fever by all means, give me a couple since that'd be foolish to do otherwise. I think of it more a convenience to just grab a quick fix that's not a necessity.

I'm not trying to stir controversy, just trying to see if there's anyone else who practices similar beliefs. The last thing I want is to start something like on the gun control thread. *shudder*

LOL, nope not trying to create controversy here either. This needs to be a gentle thread. I found a soapbox and instead of kicking it around I decided to stand on it for a moment. 8)

Not religious myself ShaulWolf although I acknowledge General Zod as the supreme ruler of the planet Houston. Methinks cutting back on soda is always a good thing. I have even cut out the diet stuff and have lost weight and feel overall healthier. Me occasionally will seek out soda with pure cane sugar as HFCS makes me sick. Coke from Mexico or Canada is the best. Best of luck to all of yas.

I have quit enough over the last month, I don't need to worry about quitting more for Lent. I quit alcohol, cigarettes, junk food, lack of exercise. I've done enough

Thanks Snuffy! Well done with the cigs mate, baby steps is definitely a good idea. That way you can move more seamlessly into a new lifestyle, without any drastic action needed. It just so happened that my abstinence coincided with quitting smoking, due to health concerns. Give yourself a pat on the back for the non-smoking, you'll get plenty of support from people like me
