    Anti-Tobacco Craziness Spreading...

In my business travels I've come across various levels of tobacco hostility at different facilities. I haven't been to a professional environment where you can still smoke in the building, so that's pretty much a given these days. Beyond that, I've seen "Smoke Free" campuses, where you can't smoke anywhere on the property. "Tobacco Free" campuses, where smokeless tobacco is also prohibited. I've even been to one "Nicotine Free" facility where even nicotine replacement therapy products were prohibited.
I thought the whole issue was with second hand smoke, but it seems to be getting more ideological when smokeless is banned.

Have you been in a situation yet where you were directed not to use your snus? Do you just ignore the direction and do it anyway?

I worked briefly for a massively large US corporation. (Until the screwed me). My 2nd day, I was called into the manager's office because someone had reported my snus usage. Seems "smokeless tobacco" was against their rules. I just continued to use, but made sure I was *mostly* discreet about it.

I worked for a restaurant company, Potbelly Sandwich works were even smelling a little like cigarette smoke was prohibited.

I really wish they would have told me this before I started there since at that time I wouldn't have taken the job. I'll be damned if I work at a place were they can terminate a person if a bum on the street blows smoke on me before I walk in.

I tried to get a job at Westgate Resorts here in Florida and on the application it asked if you were a tobacco user or not. I checked yes figuring it was a flag to discuss smoking policy. After I turned my app in I was told that they do not hire anyone who uses tobacco products. What a crazy thing.

I'm left wondering why this shit's ok, but discriminating based on sex or race isn't....

Because the hatred of tobacco users is one of the few remaining acceptable prejudices within modern society. It is encouraged in schools both public and private. It's encouraged in the workplace (many of them, at least). It's encouraged within the medical community. It's encouraged within the Federal and State governments.

It's just okay to pick on tobacco users. When I smoked, people came up to me and bitched about it. When I stopped smoking and switched to snus, people glared at me when I'd be putting in a portion in class.

I don't understand it, but this is the reality. Tobacco users are a major punching bag for anybody who wants to throw the punch.

However, I don't really mind. This open hatred makes it easier for me to pick my acquaintances. I'm very upfront about my tobacco use. If people are alright with it, they're alright with me. If not, I just add them to the endless list labeled "assholes."

The list gets longer every day.

All this talk of discrimination is bumming me out because its so true. I wish we could all get together and have a drink and a portion. Wouldn't that be nice.

                  :^O

I could never hang out with a portion user. I hear they eat babies, just like Canadians do. Portion users really are sub human, and I don't understand why they haven't yet been shipped off to the "re-education" camps.

                        I call them "chickdren". Yum!

What could possibly be wrong with eating a fine meal while doing the world a favor by reducing the human population at the same time? Win-win.

No. It's not okay. No matter what stigma there is (and there's a lot!) about smokers or chewers. I'd say this was definitely something the ACLU would jump all over, and I say that from a non-partisan viewpoint. You can't refuse employment to an otherwise-qualified individual based on their extracurricular activities.

I mean, here we are, with a perfect way to enjoy our tobacco in a manner that does not bother or 'endanger' anyone around us...
