mwood72: I'm with you. I wish I wasn't, but I am. I ordered 2 cans of Toque a few months ago, original and quit (high nic), and I can't enjoy it. I think I just need to get the hang of it, but it always ends up clogging my nose, making me sneeze like a MF, and in general treating me wrong. I want to like it, but I can't, except for on occasion (aka sometimes while drunk). Maybe I will try PP's suggestions.


One of the first times I tried snuff was in Mongolia, with my friend's dad. To thank him for his hospitality, I sent him some whiskey and honey, original, and some other kind. Roderick assured me he would make sure the Toque arrived to this crazy Mongolian address. Roderick, my Mongolian friend told me the other day that her father received the 3 cans, loves the flavors, and thinks it is enough to enjoy "for the rest of his life". He is a cig smoker who enjoys snuff on occasion. So, you now have possibly your first Mongolian Toque fan! Excellent customer service Roderick. Thanks again!

I posted this on another thread but it's good advice for beginners.

An easy way for beginners to get started is to wet/lick your thumb and fore finger before pinching as this adds moisture to your snuff and the added weight stops the snuff going to the back of your throat. Also taking your moist pinch and gently placing/rubbing it on either side of the septum works wonders and allows the beginner to take much larger pinches.

Try a good beginners snuff like Chocolate, Vanilla, Toffee or Peppermint.

Don't do what Sagedil did and go for the hardest first.

Sagedil W&H is a fine dry toast and as we know you love that even American scotch shouldn't be a problem for you.

I like the FUBAR too, but holding off till I am a bit more experienced. And yes Roderick, I like the American Scotch I got. Kind of makes sense now, but I still find the Whiskey and Honey much easier to take. There is just something magical about it.

But good to know, I will be careful in my advocating of it to brand new newbies.

I think Toque toasts are a lot smoother than the American Scotchs. F&T HDT is even smoother. It's just almost silky smooth.

There were only three choices at the tobacco shop I stopped at, and I ended up trying Gawith Apricot. It was moist, and I guess that's what made it very easy to take. It was also mentholated, which I didn't expect, but was very nice. I couldn't/can't sense any apricot in it yet, but that's most likely 'cause my nose is ****ed up from all the cigs :x

Anyway, looking forward to trying Toque--I'll go with Chocolate, Original, Vanilla, and Toffee. And I'll definitely keep my eye out for Honeybee and Buttercup.

...Too bad it's pretty disgusting when I need to blow my nose! :lol:

Gawith Apricot is a great beginner snuff. You should be able to discern the apricot after a week or 2 of snuffing. Outside air really accentuates the scent, and adds enormously to the experience. Snuff boogers are a big downside to snuff, but there's worse things in life :^)

Thanks so much for letting us know; I've been reading up on snuff after being intrigued by it on this board. I'm definitely getting some and will FORCE myself to get the hang of snuffing! I think I'll be trying the Whisky and Toast--any other flavor recommendations for a snuffing newbie?

The toasts are not for beginners. The fine dry type snuff will go way to far into your nose. Start with Original, Espresso or one of the fruit snuffs first. Benards schmalzers are great, F&T Princes Special, and Poschl if you like menthol are good places to start. Toque toasts are pro snuffs.

TBD, this is excellent advice you're passing along!

You might add... that snuff taking is all about technique. The snuff should be gently inhaled and kept to the front of the nose, and not snorted, or inhaled too forcefully as a beginner might mistakenly do. The very fine dry types of snuff (because they're so light) require an exceptionally gentle inhale, as many are pretty strong... and taking them the wrong way would cause an unpleasant experience - and turn a potential enthusiast away from what could be an enjoyable experience.

Examples of beginners snuffs (independent of nicotine content) are the coarser grinds that you mentioned.

Very fine snuffs have a grind almost like fine talcum powder. Most of the American snuffs (scotches & sweets) have this type of grind. Dholakia's Classic Indian Snuffs are in this category. Also most famously are the Classic European toasts like Fridbourg & Treyer's High Dry Toast (HDT), and Wilson's Irish High Toast (IHT) #22, and quite a few others.

Toque does have some strong snuffs as nicotine content goes but... they're a coarser grind than the "toasts" you're referring to. I guess Whiskey & Honey is a "toast" but certainly it's nothing to steer a beginner away from. So... No, though Toque may make excellent snuffs - I wouldn't say Toque toasts are pro snuffs, any more than I'd say you're a pro snuffer - but you're obviously a well-meaning individual. Please don't taking this post as any criticism of what you wrote - just an enhancement to the info.

Rob, no offense taken. After 5 months of snuffing I know I am not nearly the expert that I am am with snus. :lol:
Most of what I know is from experience, reading and asking dumb questions on another forum.

I have dabbled with American snuffs, but learned they are above my skills right now. I have a couple of BIG cans waiting for me to catch up. Point being I know where my weaknesses are. I'm so new that some days I struggle with Toque's normal snuffs.

Wow, I'm lucky to be surrounded by such snuff connoisseurs and experts! Me, I JUST BARELY caught a bit of that apricot today--when I went outside. I recall someone mentioning that being outside really helps in terms of detecting flavors/odors in snuff--YOU WERE TOTALLY RIGHT. I was so excited, I almost wet myself.

Also, do all snuffs tend to give one a runny nose, or is it mainly menthols that bring out that unattractive tendency?

Menthols do cause me more mucous, but a lot of non menthols do also. I find no rhyme or reason to what does or doesn't. Heck, a snuff I had today with no problems, may bite me bad tomorrow. The worst offender there is F&T Princes. One day it gives me no problems, the next day I can't keep it in my nose for more than a couple of minutes and I'm running for the tissues, stopped up worse than any menthol I've had. I use menthol snuff as a nose cleaning agent.
You just have to experiment and blow as needed. (No PP, not that kind of blow!)
