    Lost my job today...

Well, one of my jobs.....and I guess I brought it on myself instead of just being laid off due to the slow economy.

Basically what happened was this: I got in an accident over two years ago; someone had cut me off on the freeway and I lost control of the car. Another car hit me head-on and totaled both vehicles. The other driver had full coverage, while my dumbass had no insurance because I had just got the car driveable and let it slip my mind (I registered it before California required insurance to register a car). I was ruled not at fault but cited for not having insurance, so I went to court and due to a sympathetic judge, the citation was waived and I was only ordered to pay $100.

I never heard anything more from anyone regarding the accident until I went to the DMV to renew my license on Friday......they told me that it had been suspended for the last few weeks due to an unresolved insurance lawsuit. I went to the courthouse and found out I had a civil suit against me for $19,000. They told me I had to pay up before the DMV would reinstate my license, and would have to talk to an attorney.

So I go to my work and let them know right away, since having a license is required at my job, and they pretty much told me to kick rocks. I told them that I just needed a little time to sort it out, but they told me no can do, so I guess that's that. I have another part-time job, so I guess I'm lucky, but it still really sucks since that was one of the better jobs I've had. I was also three weeks from my paid vacation, and was getting pretty decent overtime since they had already laid off so many people anyway.

I'm not posting this for sympathy; I know I was wrong, and many people on several forums I posted on after the accident were quick to remind me of that even though I readily admitted so. It's just a reminder to NEVER drive anywhere without insurance, even if it's only for a couple of miles (my case), because if something happens, it will follow your ass for years. :x

I think I've posted these pics here before, but here they are again, before and after...

I really miss that car...

bummer dude. things will turn around for you. If you need some snus let me know. snuson
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

        Good luck getting everything sorted,

Thanks, guys....I'm not really going insane over it; I let smaller things in the past drive me to panic attacks, but I've learned a lot since then.

PP, thanks for the offer, bud. I'll keep it in mind.

Luckily, both my long-lost Northerner order and my backup Getsnus order arrived today at the same time. Snuff, Piccanells and snus overload. I seriously have so much shit crammed in my nose and lip, it's ridiculous!

                  Jason,

Sorry to hear about this man. Hope things get sorted out for you. Be glad you don't live in Jersey <insert joke here>. No insurance nets you at least a year without a license and then at least a $1,000 surcharge for the next three years. That'll be on top of the $4,000 the insurance companies will try to get you for after you're considered "high risk". A DUI will only net you 6 months without your license. Something is wrong with that.

Damn man, that blows! Hopefully things will turn around for ya real quick!

Thanks for the driving w/o insurance warning. Some people don't fully understand what just a few minutes of poor judgement can cause!

                    Good luck to ya!

I agree; something is very wrong with that. I was always under the assumption that California had stiff DUI laws, but I know more than a few people who have been nabbed more than once and somehow found loopholes to get out of any real trouble. :?

Unfortunately the way the economy is today everyone's job is on shaky grounds.

                          Hang in there.

Sorry to hear about your problems, but like others have said, hang in there and things will get better. I've been down a similar road too.

Sounds like someone got a judgment against you. You should have received something via restricted delivery mail about this. This sounds really strange... I agree with you, something is not right here.

I have moved about three times since the accident, so I assume that anything they sent me probably got bounced around in the mail and/or returned to sender.

They definitely tried to find me though.....When I checked out the case file at the courthouse, the sheriff dept. recorded every different time they tried to serve me. They went to my old address, my old job, and even my parents house in Florida. I remember my parents calling me to tell me, but the deputy would not tell them why they were serving me, and I was not about to run to a police station to find out.

The desk clerk at the court said that I should try to contact their lawyers to see where to go from here. I don't think that that's the wisest course of action, even if they are not able to soak me for any more money. The best thing I can come up with is to find a reputable traffic lawyer who does free consultation, and just get some idea of how to get it taken care of as soon as possible.
