    American Education

Someone please explain to me why the people around the world that don't speak english as a first language often speak it better than those who do?

I mean is it so much to ask that people in countries where the official language is english could at least speak it properly. I see swedes and norwegians on here that can form a sentence better than most people I know.

note: this thread is by no means directed at brits, though I'm sure they have their fair share of the same problem as well.

Education isn't as valued over here, especially amongst the lower classes. The lowest common denominator rules the day :^S

I guess that explains why the majority of the world views us as a country full of neanderthals with guns.

Still doesn't make it right though.

Anyone remember Bill Cosby's speech a few years back when he ripped on people for not speaking english properly and complaining that they were underprivileged?

Take a class with all the foreign professors I have had over the years and you'll retract your statement. These are PhD's, mind you....I have a nigerian professor right now who is barely comprehendable.

I never said some of them couldn't manage it, and I had to sit through a french class taught by a native african (only using that term cuz I can't remember which country he's from) and that was BRUTAL.... unless he was speaking french. You're bound to have people of any background that just can't figure english out, but native born americans seem to be the biggest offenders, at least to me.

Out of curiosity what's the topic of the class you're taking?

It's a masters level math course.
The class centers around conformal mapping, Riemann mapping theorem, harmonic functions, Riemann surfaces, theorems of Weierstrass and Mittag Leffler, infinite products, entire functions.

Not something you want to learn in broken English, but I'm doing fine.

precisely why I'm home schooling my kid as soon as he's old enough (due on 9-28-09).

This has proven very entertaining. Thanks for the humor folks. Keep it comin'.
