From what I recall, in LaVey's Satanism, his "Satan" is the nature of mortal man. One human beastness. But not in a negative way, but in an intellectual way. A celebration of ones human-ness, and not a glorification of a mythical super-naturalness. I like alot of Lavey's views. But, his Satanism, like many's Atheism, is based on a reaction towards Christianity. I think the imagery, rebelness, and the reaction of Christians can be an attraction. Though for me, as I studied more, I found the philosophical approach towards spirituality, like in Hinduism and Buddhism to appeal most to me.

It's a bunch of idiots involved a role playing game designed to piss off Christians to attract attention to themselves.

LaVey's cast of idiots is made up of atheists, and agnostics, and deists.
Great response. I agree. I think it's a joke. But for some people, maybe 5% of people who say "Hail Satan", they're really serious about it.

LaVey was a moron who read way too much Nietzsche.

His 'Religion' is nothing more then Nietzsche mixed with self-indulgence, baked about halfway, and then iced with Social Darwinism. Nothing really new or interesting about it.

That's a contradiction, if you belive in Satan you believe God exists, then you are longer an atheist.
What he meant to say is that 'LaVeyan' Satanists actually are atheists. They don't believe in Satan as an actual physical, metaphysical or supernatural entity. They use him merely as a symbol of their system of belief.

Ayn Rand, Nietzsche, and Crowley. He basically perverts Crowley's main law: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the Law, Love under Will. I'm not a big fan of "shock religion" myself, which is exactly what Crowley and LaVey set out to do.

Reverend Johnson: Order, order. Goddamnit, I said "order"!
Howard Johnson: Y'know, Nietzsche says: "Out of chaos comes order."
Olson Johnson: Oh, blow it out your ass, Howard.

That's actually a very good way to think of it. I agree.

Like I've already said, for the most part it's an extreme and twisted form of humanism.

LaVey was an intelligent guy, but he had a large ego and left huge loopholes when he "created" his religion.

Not touching this thread with a 10 foot poll.

                        Doh, I just did.

Look, I get the hating on established religion thing. I believe in god but do not follow any established religion. Just personal experience leads me to believe there is a god.

I would like to point out that while it is not good to be on one end of the extreme and be some crazy evangelical or muslim fanatic, it is also not good to be on the other end of the extreme and hate all religion and declare yourself a satanist.

Extremism never leads to good things, just like in politics

Like what? I like hearing people's stories and things that have led them to believe in a god/God. It's interesting to me.
