    KRETEK

Does anyone remember the Djarum unfiltered clove kreteks that they used to sell in the metal tins? I had such a craving for a kretek today and I went online and looked, and it doesnt appear they make them anymore.
The tin was red and gold. Anyone know?

    No, I am not a hippy.[/u]

    looks like this!

Beginning in October 2009, Djarum cigarettes will no longer be available for purchase in the US. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was introduced in the US Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama, giving the FDA even more control of tobacco regulations; one of the provisions in the law includes a ban on the use of flavors in tobacco, other than menthol. The ban includes kreteks.
You'll have to import them yourself.

That's harsh. Cloves were the one cigarette that actually tasted and smelled really good to me. I like the taste of a good tobacconist's private label of RYO, but for commericial, boxed, cigarettes, nothing could beat a Djarum for me. If you buy your own online, make sure you know if you're getting a US carton or not. I think they started in Indonesia (I was one of the islands near there, and I'm too knackered to look it up), and they sell cartons of 160 kreteks there.

Those were really good. They remind me of my New Orleans days.

Oh man, Djarum's are old school. I love the flavor of those things, but when they crackle like a hit of crack you gotta wonder what it's doing to your lungs lol

I like clove cigs, and they used to be pretty cheap back in the day, now everytime I see them, the price drives me away.

man it's been a while since I posted last.
Anyways, I went to one of my favorite local tobacconists to pick up some general snus and djarum blacks. I lamented how this was probably going to be the last pack I would ever buy since they're crazy expensive to ship from overseas, and PACT would kill that anyways.
Well, cloves are NOT going away...not completely anyways.
Instead of being wrapped in paper, Djarum kreteks will be wrapped in tobacco. Therefore they will legally be considered cigarillos, and THEREFORE untouchable. Tobacco magazines (yes those are still around too) have been carrying full page ads toting this latest instance in which private industry has outwitted the morons at RJ Reynolds and U.S. Congress. Sure, next they might try to whack cigarillos, but as I see it that would involve too much work for our fine men and women on capitol hill. I mean, amendments are just so damn HARD to deal with

You will be able to buy anything you want from the local tobacco shop. PACT doesn't affect commercial shipping. PACT is just designed to eliminate the possibility of not paying taxes. So local tobacco guy can import anything he pleases. Then sell it to you and charge the local tobacco tax.

Don't forget the FDA bill with the flavoring stuff. I don't remember if cigars were exempted, but I know clove cigarettes were out. By turning the cigarettes into cigars, they may be able to beat it.

I still have a Djarum every once and a while. They have always been sold in my area...at the local chain 24hr store even they have Black, Special (basicly the ones we used to get in tins when Jerry was alive and his beard was still black...sigh, memories...) Vanilla, Light and Maui. They go for a fricking arm and a leg though...$11.50.

I actualy have a pack somewhere in the house...it takes me MONTHS to go through them though. Every once a while I a hankering for one. I have a few of those old tins I keep old Dead ticket stubs in from like '84.

You can get them online..but it's a little shady...do at your own risk kind of sites....that have the feel of like RMT Gold Selling...

Precisely why Djarum is changing the wrap. Apparently Cigars and Cigarillos are lumped together and are exempted. Come on, you expect congressmen to ban something they use? I'm sure some of them are coke heads and smoke cubans, but those will be importable soon anyways (first the cigars, then maybe the coke).

Love the taste, but those things are throat destroyers. I hack up a lung whenever I smoke one.

I do as well Jason, I like the taste and the smell just not the numbing effect it has on my throat and mouth! And for the record, SAMPORA extra's used to kick ass but you can't even get them inported anymore(I think).
