Maffia paid to destroy toxic waste?

    http://www.breitbart.com/article.php...show_article=1

Italian authorities have discovered a ship that was sunk by the mafia off the coast of southern Italy with 120 barrels of radioactive waste on board, a local prosecutor said Monday.
The 110-metre (360-feet) long ship was found on Saturday 500 metres (1,640 feet) under water and around 28 kilometres (17 miles) from the coast of Calabria, Paola city prosecutor Bruno Giordano told AFP.

"For the moment, we do not know the origin of the waste, but it is probably from abroad. It is a first lead," he said.

The Cunsky is one of 32 vessels carrying toxic material that has been sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean, according to the prosecutor's office in Reggio Calabria.

The location of the Cunsky was revealed by a Calabrese mafia turncoat, Francesco Fonti, who confessed to being behind the explosion that brought the ship down, officials said.

Sebastiano Venneri, vice president of the environmental group Legambiente, said former members of the 'Ndrangheta mafia have said that the crime syndicate was paid to sink ships with radioactive material for the last 20 years.

"An investigation on the origin of this waste is therefore necessary as soon as possible," Venneri told AFP.

Someone has been paying the mob to sink ships filled with toxic waste for the last 20 years? Who could possibly stand to profit from that?

Umm...the companies that needed to get rid of it?? Sure they paid less than they would have if it had been properly disposed.

But I'm a superstitious man, and if some unlucky accident should befall that waste, if it should get shot into the sun, or if gets buried in some field, or if it ends up sleeping with the fishes, then I'm going to blame some of the people in this room. And that I do not forgive. But that aside, let me say that I swear, on the souls of my grandchildren, that I will not be the one who will break the peace we have made here today.

Depends. If it was already en route to wherever it was going than I imagine they had already made the arrangements to have it disposed of and probably paid in advance. But your right, that sounds like the most likely explanation.

Seems kind of obviouse though that they would be the first suspects. And killing employees on a boat you hired the mob to blow up sounds like it would carry a pretty hefty jail sentence lol

This really indicates what they are thinking. Plus, where do you see that anyone died. Just that the boat was sunk. If the mafia is just disposing of hazardous waste illegally, everyone gets off the ship, then you blow a hole through the hull, job done.

Proper hazardous waste disposal is incredibly expensive. even if the originators of the waste had to cover the cost of an old boat plus pay whatever ws required, still probably way cheaper than doing it legit

Sagedil: I think you'r right, they are the most likely culprit, but it seems like it would be too easy for them to get caught.

Especially if every ship for 20 years had every sailor get off of it and then it was blown up each time without hurting anyone. Obviousely they were all in on it.

I was just surprised they published the mafia turncoat's name on here. Better hope they have this guy in some good witness protection program.
