    Pay-By-The-Mile Auto Insurance

In California they have been paving the way for this for some time, and the insurance commissioner just released regulations allowing for this.
    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/256/story/78224.html

The concept is to have you pay by the mile for your insurance, in an attempt to raise the cost of driving and therefore save the environment and reduce traffic collisions. Instead of purhcasing insurance on an annual/bi-annual/monthly basis, you would pay as you go and be charged per mile.

Do you think this is a good idea or not? There's two sides to it

    1) If you don't drive a lot already (like me), it may be cheaper, but

    2) It may lead to even more taxes in the future since now they have the GPS in your car, who's to say they won't start issuing speeding tickets based on the speed they clock you at on your GPS. Wouldn't even have to pay a cop to catch you.

Does anyone live in a state where they have an insurance scheme like this or is this once again being championed by Kalifornia the great...

Sounds fine as long as you have the choice to pick a traditional insurance plan if you want.

I think the plan is to mandate it for all CA residents to help reduce smog and traffic collisions. Wouldnt be effective unless everyone wa doing it I would imagine.

Yah, this is the same old game. Just like when they said insurance would be cheaper if EVERYONE had it, but premiums just went up since you have to buy it now.

Hey how do you like Ohio? My dad lives in Cincinnati and the housing market seems pretty cheap there, way cheaper than CA.

This is disgusting. If they really want to do a system like this they should create a universal state-wide insurance plan and pay premiums from a proportionate tax on gasoline. Doing it via GPS is ridiculous and invasive, and mandating it is even more so. You can't mandate something without providing benefit for the mandate. This would also make sure they aren't requiring extra income for interstate travel.

But that would be "universal coverage" which is a bad idea for the private industry in California.

Ah well, California. First to come up with great liberal ideas, first to ruin them with overly invasive concepts.

As long as you can travel a few times a year Ohio is great. Average cost of living, no natural disasters, good sports, good theme parks, good universities, close to a lot of big cities so most bands tour somewhere within driving distance...

I was born here so I am biased.

Kinda land locked but my wife's Dad lives in San diego and my Dad lives on a lake in Tennessee. We go to Florida and North Carolina every year or so. I like it.

                no natural disasters
They're not natural, but the Browns and Indians are still a disaster.

I was born here in VA but lived the first 5 years of my life in Canal Fulton, OH just north of Canton. I go there at least once a year and used to vacation at Lake Hope near Columbus. I love Ohio like mad, but the winters are BRUTAL.

                  True dat.

But with sports, usually someone is good between the Bengals, Browns, Cavs, Crew, Blue Jackets, Reds, Indians... and of course the Buckeyes. People are freaks about the Buckeyes around here. Thats my Alma Mater so I'm a freak too.

Also, I like winter maybe more then summer.

Last time I was in Ohia was the beginning of January and it was snowing somethign fierce down there. It would be a big change from California, that's for sure.

i personally love this idea, but only if made optional. basically because i live a block away from work, wendys, walgreens, gamestop, and a mediteranean deli/liquor store. so i drive maybe once a week, and am wary because i cant afford insurance at the moment, and it is mandatory in michigan. if you get pulled over and have no proof of insurance, you can get 30 days in jail, your car impounded, fines, and a drivers responsibility fee that is 500 dollars for 2 years. its stupid. i know this because it happened to my girlfriend a year ago with my moms car, it was a big ****ing deal.

Even I could agree to something like you proposed. The GPS thing just makes me wearry, you know how little I trust these beurocrats. Seems like it would be mroe expensive for the state to pay for all this tracking equipment to. the gasoline tax idea would be better. But of course, I would have to blame Obama for breaking his promise of no tax on the middle class  just for good measure., even though he has nothign to do with it.

I am in a similar situation. I live within 10 min of everything and only occasionaly make the drive up to San Francisco (about an hour). My insurance is high imo so this would in theory help me as an individual, but not sure if this would be good if mandated on everyone.

But if you know CA, it will be mandated on everyone. Hell in most partsof this state it's illegal to use plastic bags at the supermarket because they are bad for the environment. Where's the hippie sscreaming about how many trees will be cut down since we only use paper now?

It's not just that...imagine "we see you've gone to martial arts academies, went to a gun store, gone to Tijuana twice, and visit the Golden Gate bridge twice a year. Care to explain?"

I'm shaking my head. You guys are should write for Glenn Beck. The privacy concerns (the kind of stuff the ACLU fights for, whom conservatives hate) have already been addressed.

..Addressing privacy concerns, the regulations prohibit per-mile policies from using technological devices to collect information about the location of a vehicle...
                              That means no GPS.

If you own two or 3 cars, you will save a shitload of money on the cars that are sitting in your driveway.

If you are unemployed or retired you would save a shitload of money.

Imagine that :!: The people that drive more miles might pay more and the people that drive less would pay less. I guess you fascist communists like the idea of everyone paying the same for their insurance regardless of how many miles they drive.
