Lords Of Dorkness have a look

Its Saturday woot! Wife and kids gone until tomorrow afternoon. I am gonna go get a lapdance and do some shots with the fellas. Just kidding.

Got a decent mother board, 3 GHZ Intel Pentium CPU, 2 Gigs of RAM. 3 Hard drives for a total of 580 Gigs and an old used case with a 500 watt PSU in it. Gonna make some coffee, insert some General Ekstra Sterk, and build a FreeBSD server. Sounds like fun eh?

I am torn on encryption..Geli or gdbe? Probably geli since I would like whole system partition to be encrypted with AES..But would suck entering passphrase during system boot when I only intend to access box via shell..I don't need any of this encrytipn just like to be all 007. All this extra storage for FTP gonna rock! What says SnusOn geeks?

    huh?

I can understand and really appreciate the lapdance, shots and such but the other stuff is a greek to me.

    you can call me zeus
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

lol like that avatar Chad.......but we are all accustomed to the old one. Which, btw, was an incredible likeness to your actual photo.

If I were hardcore cool I could just get a lapdance while I build server.

My opinion would be to go for the lap dance AND the shots. I would call that a win/win.

Didn't mean to threadjack. I don't know alot about computers, mostly internet stuff. I bought a Mac for the sheer fact that it's simple, efficient, and works wonders. But I won't turn this into a Mac vs PC thread. Just sorry I can't help!

Seriously: I don't know beans about which encryption scheme is better, etc., but as a general rule I tend to choose security over convenience. It would just depend on what's being secured and the ramifications of a breach. I guess that's not too helpful.

You are right, I am going to use geli. server should stay up as long as no power failures occur..So hooking up a keyboard 4 or 5 times a year is a minor inconvenience . I am well versed in IPFW and several IDS's, behind NAT, so remote breach isnt a huge concern. Mostly FBI breaking in my door confiscating my drives and find all my illegal widgets and massive ebook collection of bomb making secrets All hypothetically of course because I'm a bored and without a life. Truecrypt works well on my linux machines but I used is on BSD once and it turned into an unrecoverable disaster.

You're way ahead of me I'm more of a geek-wannabee; I did slog my way through with Slackware for a few years so I'm pretty comfortable with a Linux system, which is what I use at home now. I've never tinkered with BSD, though, and I'm not where I'm sure I should be WRT security. Just one more trusting fool with a computer on the Internet.

I wouldn't use any encryption. It's just adds another failure point when something goes wrong.
