Tips for Posting in Political Threads

    1. If you don't believe you can effectively argue your point, maybe due to a lack of understanding of the subject, don't post. The odds are high that you'll be walking away with your tail between your legs.

    2. If you have a reputation to keep, don't you forget it. This is related to tip #1. If you've made a name for yourself here for being a well balanced and considerate individual, don't project yourself as anything less if you choose to debate unless you're sure your audience will see things from your point of view.

    2. Keep it civil: Be as emotional as you like, that's what makes for a classical debate, but don't disregard ethics and logic.

    3. Be as specific as you can when writing the subject before posting so that those who do not wish to read or participate can recognize that right away and not enter the thread.

If anyone has any more tips to add, please post them. Perhaps we can get this stickied if we get some more good ones together.

If you do not like political discussions and see a political thread come up, avoid it. If you know you don't like reading these things, just save yourself the anger and don't go into it. This way the ones who want to discuss can, and the ones who don't avoid it. Perhaps tag every subject line by saying POLITICAL - "Subject line", or something.

Could we add one, if you're going to argue something, back it up with sources? That could make things a little bit easier.

Sure, please add as many as you can come up with. I totally agree with you, as an educator, sources always help!

If you can end a political thread with a quote that everyone agrees on then the thread should be locked

The rule I use for myself when I see a political thread?
            Don't. Say. Anything.

Because I know I'll piss someone off. And I don't like doing that.

The first rule of political threads is that you don't talk about political threads.

The second rule of political threads is that you DO NOT TALK ABOUT POLITICAL THREADS.

Third rule, someone quotes Glen Beck, someone says "I saw on Fox", the thread is over.

Compare a politician with Hitler, you're immediately accused of Godwinning.

And the fifth rule of political threads...if this is your first political post...you have to rant.

I'm down for a political fight club VB

But to be fair, you can't say everything from fox is fake , any more than it is on other networks. Everyone has their slant it just depends who's side you agree with.

I could say anything from "the view", MSNBC, Huffington Post, Daily Kos etc ends the thread but that's not necessarily true.

EDIT: Did you hear that Glenn Beck Raped, Murdered a Young Girl in 1990? lol

?? What do you mean. Are you trying to claim that the only media outlet that has a slant (be it left or right) is fox news?

That is ridiculous and I hope you were just joking. You might as well say in religious debate this or that religion is excluded.

If someone makes a crazy point then just criticize the point its completely ignorant to exclude debate involving any source. Whether the source is biased or not this type of attitude is censorship.

                              Haha, like Pat Robertson?

I was joking. Calm down folks, it was a tongue in cheek Fight Club parody post.
