I had to have my older cat put to sleep tonight.

    She was almost 18.
The last few days she hasn't been eating but drinking a lot of water.
Today it looked like she was having trouble walking.
After running all kind of tests the Vet said it was kidney failure and with her age their was nothing that could be done.
I held her while they gave her the injection. They wanted to just take her in the back and then bring her back when they were done.
I just couldn't do that though. I felt I had to be with her. I didn't want her to die with just strangers around. Scared and wondering what was happening.

So I'm just sitting here crying tonight wishing she was here sitting on my lap.

I know what you are going through. My ex and I needed to put down our oldest last year. She had been going downhill, my ex was having to go out of town and Sappho was too sick to be left alone so she stayed at the vet that week. I spent every day with her, and spent much time talking with the doctors and it was just clear we were fighting a fight we shouldn't any more. So when Laura came home, we both decided it ws the right thing to do. I am just grateful that Laura gave me an few hours to spend with Sappho alone the night before. I at least know she knew how loved she was till her very end.

As hard as tonight is my friend, be grateful for every day she gave you

      My condolences d :'^(

It's losing a pet. I had to put my last kitty down, and I'm really gonna miss the 2 I have now when they're gone.

That's sad. I love my 3 cats. It's a long story but I'm 31 now and I've never dealt with the death of a pet. Loss, but not death. Weird childhood. I'm sorry ddandb. My favorite dog, who belonged to a close friend, was put to sleep last week. RIP Ashkah. She went so fast -- two months ago she was chasing squirrels. I said goodbye to her in a bar and literally wept tears into my beer. Keep your chin up.

18 is a long time to have a pet, but at least you have those years to look back on. I had to put my dog down in august, she was 12. I still think about her everyday.
You're tougher than me, though. I couldn't be with her during the injection. All the doctors and assistants were in the room at one point, giving her treats and petting her, and that was the first time I saw her happy in two months. That's how I wanted to remember her.
Pets are family, so when we lose them it stings the same. But it's better to experience the joy of a pet and suffer the loss than to never know it at all. Hang in there.

I'm sorry dude, that really sucks. I had a cat for 15 years and she passed away May 18th, 2004. She ment everything to me. I knew that night before I went to work, she would be gone when I came home. It was really hard. I have a 5 year old cat now, who has a similar personality, and it's gonna hurt when she goes. Pets are more then pets, their part of your family.

I'm very sorry. I have a 14 y.o., and we've been together since he was tiny. He's been having some issues lately that we are managing with medication, but it's hard to tell how much longer he'll be around. My heart goes out to you.
