OMG I can't believe this shit. When I went thru, if someone even asked about girl push-ups, that person would spend the rest of the day in the front leaning rest. I think this might be my calling to go thru drill sergeant school and start kicking some sorry ass.
I feel violated. (Military Servicemembers Read!)

Yah some of these units, especially the support ones are getting way to lax nowadays. I'm stuck running 4-6 miles and they are walking and joking, taking a brisk morning walk to start the day. Makes me sick (only because I wished I were the one walking lol)

Needless to say, that was my last appt. with her! I got a new doctor immediately!! Sorry..this may have been a little TMI.

Yeah, I'm going Navy. Tom is correct about the smoking at Great Lakes back in the early 80s. It was almost encouraged because they would give smoke breaks for smokers and everyone else would have to stay inside and continue cleaning.
I don't believe I'll be able to use any tobacco at RTC, but the entire day at the MEPs yesterday until noon today I did not use any snus and I felt fine. Of course now it's snowing and I want a cigarette really bad!!

Thats exactly how I picked up dipping full time. Its the only way you could get a break is if you smoked or dipped.

Man, I remember MEPS... I had the option of going to Ft. Dix or to Brooklyn since either one would be the same travel time. I ended up going to Brooklyn.
The Gunny figured I was smart enough to go on my own since I was a big boy who graduated college and didn't need someone holding my hand. It was kind of funny explaining that to the other guys who had their point of contacts drive them over and wait nearby to pick them up for the trip back.
"Wait, how'd you get past the gate then?"
"I told them I was here for MEPS, gave them my OSO contact info, and asked where to park."
"... That works? Damnit!"
It was funnier when I told a few I was an OCS candidate.
"So which branch are you going into?"
*points to the USMC folder*
"Dude, have fun at boot camp. That's some hardcore shit."
"Actually, I'm going for OCS."
"Wait, you're going as an officer? Do I have to salute you or something?"
"Yes. That's exactly why I got through the gate so easily without an escort, and why the sergeants are calling me sir."
"Oh, shit, sorry, sir. Wait a minute, you're just messing with me. That's not cool, man."
The medical exams were funny as hell. They weren't at all difficult, just tedious. We had a lot of people there so they took a while. I got there at 0545 and we started at 0600, and didn't finish until 1600. Some of the guys came back with snacks since they had time before their next phase. Nope, I was stuck in line and missed the meal.
"Hey, you eat yet?"
"I didn't even know they had a mess hall here."
"Hell yeah, man! The sandwiches weren't that great, but free food's free, you know?"
"... ..... No, I don't know. I've been stuck here, remember?"
"Oh, shit, sorry, dog. I guess you missed out on some food then."
And he proceeds to munch on a bag of chips he stashed and brought with him.
"Hey, you gonna share some of that since you got it with you?"
"What, my food?"
Oh, great, one of those guys. I can bluff this one easily.
"Ok, let me rephrase that. Are you going to share the contraband you decided to bring in an area where they specifically stated not to take that to, or am I going to have to grab the sergeant around the corner and have you DQed."
"Uhhh... no, sir, here you go."
"Thank you. Oh, you know that the sergeants are on the other end of the wing, right?"
"Oh, you asshole!"
"Says the one refusing to share the goods."
"... Ok, I deserved that one."
And then the part where everyone strips to their boxers and does basic motion and coordination tests. It was funny to see who didn't understand or couldn't kneel, then lean forward onto their knees, and walk on their knees for five steps. Or to stand on one foot, hold the other foot out, and turn their foot. Or who felt the need to suck in their gut and flex every few seconds.
"You know you can breath, right?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Your pant size is what, 36? And you're 5' 10"? You can stop trying to make it look like you're a 34."
"... That bad, huh?"
"Nah. But it does look a little gay that you're trying to impress a room full of half naked guys."
Note to self, avoid smart ass comments around officer instructors at OCS. They might find it funny, but they're only allowed to show us pain.

I went to boot camp in Dix in 72. AIT in Gordon and jump school at Benning. Stationed at Bragg the rest of my enlistment. I think we were allowed to smoke after week four of basic.
Women were WACS back then. None in regular units when I enlisted that I was aware of. By the time I got out there was a woman assigned as a parachute rigger. That was blasphemy. Sorry ladies it was just the way it was back then.
The 82nd was party time back then also, at least in the barracks. A lot of dope and booze. I guess when you put thousands of 18-21 year olds together that shit is gonna happen. Everyone took the FTX's pretty seriously though. Just about all of our NCO's did multiple tours in Nam so they got paid attention to. They earned it and besides if you pissed them off they'd drag your ass out behind a Conex and proceed to whip your ass. NCO's were still allowed to smack the shit out of you. I witnessed a couple of 'attitude adjustments'.
I was really a gung ho ****er in the field. I figured what I was learning there might keep me alive someday. It's when we were doing post support that I wrote checks with my mouth that my ass couldn't cash. I made PFC and SP4 twice in my three year tour. Dam CO didn't have a sense of humor.
Man I don't remember anyone packing my chute with a finger or hand or anything else in the Army. That's the province of my current doctor now that I'm sneaking up on 60. My last doctor's exam reminded me of a movie from the 90's, Unlawful Entry. The least the bastard could have done was buy me a drink or dinner first.

Yah the 82nd is still very a very non-female place, at least in the infantry companies. The riggers and the support companies (88M truck dirvers etc) are the only women we ever saw. There were about 4 girls in our battalion, so as you would guess, they got beat up pretty bad by multiple people over the years. Army chicks are the loosest in town.
Also, re: rank, if you havn't been busted down to pvt at least once, you havn't fully enjoyed the army experience lol.
