I'm an atheist myself, What polititians do in their private lives is fine but when when it comes to public office that's where I draw the line.
Do you understand the difference between atheist and secular? We don't make decisions based on someone's religious superstitions, whether it's Mitt Romney's magic underwear, Sarah Palin being prayed over by a witch doctor, or Mike Huckabee who belives in the inerrancy of the bible and believes that politics and religion go hand in hand.
Hawking does not make a habit of making fun out of religion. Since much of his career has been spent working on Big Bang cosmology it's kind of ironic that the Pope told physicists they should not inquire into the Big Bang itself because that was “the work of God.” When the church is that clueless about science they deserve to be made fun of.
Hawking has stated that he is "not religious in the normal sense" and he believes that "the universe is governed by the laws of science. The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws."
