    So the Gunny called...

and he asked what I would do if I didn't make it into Officer Candidate School with the USMC this January. I kept thinking "Son of a bitch, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, ****!". What I told him was I'd quit my current job, enroll in police academy ASAP, and apply for the next OCS class.

Then he asked what I'd do if I did get in. I told him I'd quit my current job, hit the gym like a son of a bitch, and get ready for hell. Then he told me I have about 4 weeks before I have to report.

That's right, I'm going to OCS this January. 10 weeks of sleep deprivation, muscles so sore I'll want to puke, and mental stress that most people would require therapy for afterwords. Oh man, I'm so looking forward to it. And dreading it. And looking forward to it.

Kool,,,, I wish you the best of luck
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Though I didn't do any military service my family has a long history of Naval officers and my father was an officer in the Air force. I respect you and thank you for choosing to take your military career to the next level. Beyond the politics of any particular conflict I believe the military to be in the highest percentile of honorable professions.

You rock and congratulations! But, just to be the voice of reason here, and maybe it'll help you prepare: Having many officer friends, I can tell you the things you described will not be occurring. Thats how I thought basic would be but it's not that bad, and OCS is ever easier. You'll do more learning and classroom based things than anything, but you'll do the basic training regiment as well. It'll only be hard at first, after that the only hard thing will be the fact that your treated like a child and having to play the waiting game until your X amount of months are done.

It'll be a cake walk though especially if you can run a few miles without killing yourself.

The ability to run long distances at a reasonable pace is the key in preparing. Everything else you'll pick up along the way.

Have a blast though and let us know where you end up being stationed once your out!

Thanks, guys! sgreger1, I figure that the PT part of it won't be overly difficult, but I see it as expect hell so everything else comes easier. The guys who did the PLC program (2 six week sessions) told me that the PT was reasonable to easy if I keep in good shape. It's the daily grind and getting less sleep that wears a lot of people down. Well, I didn't come this far for nothing. Now to just get used to cold weather...

Youve got the right attitude! I went in expecting hell and it did make it easier. Your right though, I lost mad sleep even though it was lights out at like 10 you gotta wake up at 4:30 or 5 and do PT, and we werent allowed to shower after doing PT so you just feel like shit all day long. Then they dont let you sleep when your not doing aynthing and the IBA's (Body armor) back plate makes a perfect place for you to restyour head and sleep upright.

Man oh man, are you gonna love hauling all that body armor and ruck sack around with you everywhere, plus your carbine. But it'll be a liberating experience.

Get ready for the cold? Get ready for the heat, Afghanistan baby! Actually it gets freezing in Afghanistan too so your screwed either way lol. What field of the marines are you trying to get into?

Three picks are Intel or Infantry. I'm also curious about Light Armored Recon or Artillery, but my two top picks are Intel or Infantry. Jackie hates the thought of me going into infantry, and understandably so. Could be worse though. I could be trying to work for the Camden, NJ police department.
