Harmonix doesn't know what they're doing THAT well. They sold the rights to Guitar Hero after 80's, and then basically just Activision copy the idea of bringing other instruments to the table, not to mention a slew of imitation rhythm games. Yes, I will give them credit for the large catalog of music, thanks to the import ability. Yet this also locks Harmonix down. Should they decide to release RB3, they won't be able to make any changes, aside from.. well, basically cosmetic stuff only. They can give the game a facelift and that's it. Otherwise that huuuuuge library of RB2 songs isn't going to carry over into the new game, and then what?
But the "Rock Band Network" is nothing new. The kind folks over at Scorehero have been charting whatever they want since Guitar Hero III hit the PC. Oh, and free, too. The project has since moved on to later GH releases to include the other instruments; they have all kinds of music and indie artists. To me this is just another example of Harmonix's greed, as they intend to take a fair cut of the profits from each download. "Hey, let's cut back on paying for the RIGHTS to songs, lets get our future DLC for FREE!" know what I'm sayin'?
And.. lol. The vocals on Rock Band (or Guitar Hero, for that matter) are laughable. With a crude, poor quality microphone and a 50-100ms delay, not to mention terrible pitch-recognition, I see vocals as a cruel joke. Sort of like the Wii Remote.. Just a gimmick.
just my two, eh
