Is it just me, or does new music suck?

I dont know if i'm just not with the times or what but it seems to me that whenever I throw my IPOD on while i'm riding my street-bike I find myself just listening to older shit. It seems that there has been no good music for at LEAST 5 year, and even then it's only 1 or two bands. Most of the decent music was before I was even born (86) or shortly then-after.

Has anyone else realized that the modern emo &/or rap just ****ing sucks? It's either about privileged white kids bitching about their life or black people talking about how rich they are and picking up girls in the club. I like almost every genre but it just seems that there is an embargo on original music nowadays.

Especially with 2 wars going on you would figure some good old nam era music would come out talking about current events or something. I'm sick of hearing rich rappers talk about how many bitches they hit, and then I turn on the TV and I am forced to watch 1 of a million reality shows about the kardashian's or some other rich people living their life in luxury.

Does anyone else feel this too or am I just some oddball?

I agree. I hate all popular music, and really hate rap. My fave bands are my fave bands which I still listen to since the early 80's and before, Motorhead, Venom, and new bands that carry on that style, Warhammer, Darkthrone. But then you see, I mainly like underground metal and punk. But even Warhammer and Darkthrone, and Immortal are not new anymore. I did just get a new band's CD, Ravens Creed, and it's real good, but then it's old Venom style. But yeah, anything post '90 probably sucks.

        +1 on the Kardashians plug.

I saw an article about them on Yahoo news today and decided to figure out what makes them so special. So I Googled "who the **** are the Kardashians?" and basically found out that they're just a bunch of celebutante whores who got famous because their late father was one of OJ Simpson's lawyers.

Define "new music". If you're talking about the crap that gets played on the radio, or wins music awards, then yes, it's all garbage. There's good music out there, but you have to put some effort into finding it :^)

+1 Completely agree with you here. I can't remember the last time i've listened to the radio. There is a lot of good current music out there, but like lxskllr said, you have to look for it. I have found a ton of 'new' bands just endlessly searching online. Found some great great stuff.

Yep, sgreger1 and lxskllr, your posts combined pretty much nail it. I suppose there is good new music, but it takes some serious work to find it. The shit that's popular today is such disgusting garbage. Rap music has sucked balls for pretty much the entire decade, and the emo tinge to popular rock is gag-inducing. I wish great rock bands like tool would put an album out more than once every 5 years. Like you said sgreger, I listen to old music pretty much exclusively. I'm a 1930's to 1990's kind of guy lol. There is one great radio station I'm aware of, KEXP in Seattle. Listener-funded, no commercials, the DJs are mostly awesome and they play whatever they like. That and "hip" friends who are in bands and know the underground scene well are the only way I know of to discover anything new and good. Other than that, I'm content to continue discovering old music that is new to me. One more thing, like you said sgreger, pop music today has shattered my old theory that strife, conflict, and bad economic times lay the groundwork for inspiring music. That certainly hasn't been the case this decade.

Imo, the last decent album was Abbey Road. Everything after that is crap.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I stopped listening or caring somewhere in the late 90's. Honestly I could not even name a Brittany Spears or Timberlake song. There was also a whole soft grunge, cheese rock and bad rap scene that I also missed. Although I never was really into the techno it was pretty refreshing to hear after the late 90's. The early 2000's seemed to be much more creative but the end of this decade seems to be re-hashing old beats and styles. Nothing really groundbreaking.

Mainstream new music sucks. However, there are alot of Indie artists that are making some good music.

Music was really good in the 80's (80's hair bands and pop, I still love it) and the 90's (alternative & feel good music). Seems like after 96 music lost it's way.

There are a few new guys here and there that are good. For example, Wolfmother. But everything else...blah, garbage.

I stopped caring about music about 5 years ago.
If I get nostalgic I've got 30 gigs of mp3s on the harddrive.

When I use my Ipod it's mostly stuff from The Teaching Company

It's pretty much all available via USENET for free.

As others have said, you need to put some time into finding it. There's good music out there, but it can be tough to find. If you're really stuck in a rut and have no time to find new stuff, try last.fm. It keeps track of what you listen to, and based on what other people who listen to the same stuff have played, gives you recommendations. It's not always an exact hit, but it tends to work better the more songs you get in your library. Right now, it's tracked 42425 songs I've listened to, and cranks out recommendations based on them. Works for me.

I mean mainstream top 50 kinda music like what gets played on the radio.

I mean someone must love it for it to be that popular

Roo: I mean really though between a bad economy and two wars we should be hearing some game changing songs or a new genre of music or something.

Maybe people just arent doing enough drugs to make good music anymore. Heroine stimulis package to bail out sucky artists maybe?

Yea, it all sucks then. Artistic integrity isn't what the mainstream looks for. They want predictable, and lowest common denominator.

They have computer programs that rank the potential of new music to do well on the charts, and the ranking will change as the song gets tweaked. And you wonder why music sucks....
